I like the concept of both of them but they also both come across as just too busy for me.

I realize that these are not the quilted pieces that you are going to use.

I would pull colors out of the quilted piece for the flowers, even if that meant using white or cream flowers,  to keep it  a little more cohesive.

I would use white and off white colours for the flowers and would go with your setup in the second pic.

The phrase “pull colors out of” means that you look at the article in question, and figure out what colors it includes, then use those colors in something else, in this case your flowers. For example, this quilted placemat includes blue, grey, mustard and cream.

If I were going to “pull” colors for flowers from this placemat, i would use mustard, grey and cream.

The reason I said “even if it that meant using white or cream flowers” is precisely because there are not a lot of blue flowers  and I can’t see the placemats your mother is making to know what colors are included. I am not suggesting that your mother shoudn’t make the placemats. Just make sure the placemats don’t compete with the flowers, or vice versa.

@Katnisseverdeen:  I just googled “quilted placemat” so I could get an example.

@kay01:  prices may be different where you live, but here I can get a whole bouquet of mums, alstroemeria etc for the price of 3 gerberas.
