Has anyone ever rented a house for a wedding? I wanted a backyard wedding but our backyard isn’t big enough and there needs a lot of work done for it so I thought of renting a house in Palm Springs or La Quinta, California.

That is what we are doing! We have rented a house on Lake Travis in Austin for 3 nights. Its prolly the best thing we did! Its kind of expensive, but it sleeps 16 ppl so that will hold our bridal party and their dates and us for Friday night. Everything is right there! Our familes have rented houses in the same area so noone has to drive after the reception. Look into it, you’ll love it!!

Yes! We actually found the house we are renting for our wedding on VRBO and I’m very excited. Like Miss.Lace the house we rented is big enough to hold the wedding party. It’s challenging planning a wedding at a house but it’s great that we are in control of all the details!

We’ve been thinking about something like this too- how did you approach the renter? What I mean is, I was concerned that people may not want to rent to us knowing we wanted to host a wedding on the premises. Were you open about this up front? How many guests are you planning for? I’m worried about the basic issues associated with having a backyard wedding, like power and bathrooms and rain. Thanks!

I looked into this briefly. It’s hard to find a landlord who will let you do this but there are properties out there. Some are willing to even it doesn’t list on their listing. Just shoot them an email to ask.
Some will probably ask you to provide liability insurance though.
I think if you are doing this you HAVE to tell them!

We were up front about the wedding. We had no idea what went into planning a wedding at a private residence and we knew this particular house was host to weddings in the past, so we wanted to know what we needed to cover up front. We were charged extra for an “event fee” which the owner said was applied to extra power usage and clean up.
We are having a smaller wedding with about 60 guests. Our house has several bathrooms so we aren’t too worried about his part, but we are still undecided about a rain plan as we are hoping to have the wedding outside. It has a ton of extra space to do it inside but it just wouldn’t be as pretty.

I have never thought of this, but what a FANTASTIC idea! I am filing this away for friends!

I was looking into this option for my SIL in Maui, and it must be fairly common there, because many houses explicitly said they would accept weddings with X amount of people.
