So we used a family diamond for my ring. I knew my boyfriend had my grandmother’s ring. I got it from my mom and gave it to him (after I had pranced around the house for a day wearing it, of course) I didn’t think he had taken it in to get re-set into my chosen setting. (My grandmother’s ring had grown too delicate and fragile after 50+ years of wear, so I was encouraged to get a setting I loved)
I have never had my ring finger sized. I figured that the jeweler would ask my boyfriend and then he would be forced to ask me! (or try to size it while I was sleeping or something..) This way I would know the ring was being made… I thought I was sooo clever.
Turns out my boyfriend didn’t realize I could only wear my grandmother’s ring on my middle finger, and he had the new one made in the same size. So I was surprised by getting the ring earlier than I expected (yay) but it is too big (boo). Foiled by my own ‘cleverness’ once again..
Anyone else setting ‘booby traps’ that will spring when your bf has reached a certain stage of engagement planning? I also knew he didn’t know my Dad’s phone number, so I was hoping to use that as an indicator as well.

haha! I had a cocktail ring in my jewelry box that I always wore on my middle finger. That’s what DH used for sizing. So it was too big. We had to have it resized twice. Silliness.. not every finger is the same size. Part of the fun memories though.

Haha, I woke up one morning to see DH rummaging through my jewelry box! He picked out a diamond ring I got from my dad, assuming it was for my ring finger – it wasn’t! Thankfully we just went back and got it resized from the place he bought it but he did feel a bit sheepish!

When I went to pick out the ring with Now-husband, we forgot about checking the size. Then I found it in his closet, and did NOT look, but figured it wouldn’t fit. So I went back to the store by myself, got sized, and gave him a card with the size on it to remind him of it. I think the single most disappointing thing about the proposal was that he didn’t care enough to double check the size after that GIANT hint and it did not fit at all. It felt like it wasn’t even MY ring. I know that’s dumb, but still.

My booby traps!! (the reasons I’d know a ring is imminent!!)
- He’d want to visit my parents (to ask for a blessing, of course!). Currenly I’ve never seen a bf want to visit the future in-laws as much as my bf does! He bugs me constantly to want to make a trip to see them (they’re 2000 miles away), but he’s waited too long. He should have asked my dad before because now there is no time (work obligations) or annual leave saved to visit my parents this year.
- The money would be gone from his money market account. It’s currently sitting there, so nope!
- We’d go ring shopping (it was my choice and I told him that I wanted to help pick it out). Currently we’ve visited multiple places (!!!!!), but we’re stuck between two rings shapes.

Haha, sort of. I find myself obsessively checking the section of my jewelery box where my rings are to see if any of them are displaced. I even have my class ring in front, facing a certain way so that I’ll know if it’s been moved. I feel like it would be kind of the obvious choice for BF to go for. And it fits my ring finger perfectly!
