I interviewed for a job last Tuesday. I sent a handwritten thank you note that day. So it should have arrived the following day or that Thursday at the latest. One interviewer said they hoped to let candiates know by that Friday and the other one said early this week. I emailed HR yesterday to see if there had been any updates….and so far no response.
I get that I’m being impatient…but should I be doing anything else?

@notbridey: I don’t think so. Hiring can take some time. When I worked in HR, it generally took a few weeks to get from a first interview to a second interview.
You can eventually follow up with the company, but I recommend doing this wisely. We had people who followed up obsessively, and this lost them the job. I would call at the end of the week to ask about the status of your application.

@notbridey: Not unless you have contact info for the person who interviewed you.
I’ve been brushed off and been the brushee. It happens. I found out via the grapevine that a position was filled internally – you could have just told me that! Not ignored me for weeks when I emailed/called. Then again, I’d almost rather than than HR calling and straight up lying to me that they hired someone with more experience when I know they hired someone with NO experience, it was just someone who didn’t have to relocated and would work for less $$.
As the one doing the hiring – it’s uncomfortable to make the “we went with someone else” phonecall so I’m guilty of just letting it slip. Or just plain forgetting until it’s an awkwardly long amount of time since I should have done it, then it’d be even weirder.

In DH’s company, they regularly make people wait 2-4 weeks for hiring decisions and even longer for promotion decisions!

yeah i definitely don’t want to annoy them!
i had two people interview me…HR person and Nurse manager. I do know that there were two internal folks applying for the position and I know they are given priority. So I’m just kind of waiting to hear because there are 4 other positions at the hospital that I’m qualified for…will it look bad if I go ahead and apply for them?
When I’ve applied for other positions at this hospital if I’m not qualified or got in at the tail end of the application process they are quick with a this position has been filled email.
I’d really like this job which is why I’m so impatient. sigh. I think it’s time to step away from the email inbox and phone for just a bit because it’s only making me tense and grumpy. 😛

@notbridey: Always keep looking! Apply for all the jobs!

@notbridey: I would definitely apply for all of the open positions! I would contact the HR person at the end of the week if you haven’t heard anything by then. These things always talk longer than expected.

I am in the same boat — just waiting. It’s so frustrating! I called HR on Monday and the woman said they haven’t filled the position, so if I haven’t received a letter (typically they send a “you’re not hired” letter), I’m still being considered. She said to call again at the end of the week. UGH. I just want to know NOW!

Also waiting. I hate when they say they want to make a decision ‘within the week’ which typically means ‘in the next month if we feel like getting snazzy.’ I’m not going to be offended if you take more time to make a decision, just be upfront with me about it so I don’t have to annoy the living crap out of the office assistant who works the front desk.

sending me a no, at this time you are not qualified for this position takes…what 5 minutes of your time?

No more to do at this time. But I feel your pain!!! I’m super anxious right now waiting to hear if I’m getting a 2nd interview. Waiting for this is worse than waiting for the ring!
Hopefully, we both hear good things soon!

@notbridey: I would continue to apply for the other positions, I don’t think it will look bad.
I have been applying for hospital jobs since May when I graduated and I just accepted an offer a couple weeks ago! It took them 1 and 1/2 weeks to get back to me. You never know how long it will take because every company is different, and you don’t know how busy they are. But I think it is completely appropriate to call/email them when their ‘set deadline’ comes and goes and you haven’t heard anything.
I interviewed for one position at a hospital almost 2 months ago and they never called me back…they said they would call me within 2 weeks…nothing! I don’t care though, I did not like the lady that would have been my boss lol
I agree with your last comment, why not just let us know that you’ve moved on and picked someone else?! Any feedback is better than none!
I know it’s frustrating! GOOD LUCK with this position! I hope they contact you soon 🙂

i called today and it looks like they extended an offer to someone but haven’t heard back. The HR lady asked if I had looked at any other positions and I said yes and she said she’d call me back. One of the positions I applied for already sent me some screening questions so I responded to those. I feel like eventually I’ve got to be hired for one of the jobs…law of averages and what not.
one is a night shift position which I’ve never done so that will be super interesting!

@notbridey: I hope that first person falls through and you get it. Good luck!
