I booked Monique Powers for my wedding. Was very impressed with her website especially since not many makeup artists post their before and after pix. Was also very impressed by the reviews about her online. Booked her right away (before my trial, which I admit was my mistake) but I thought I was running out of time to book a makeup artist. Turns out she was the worst vendor I hired in my event.
Here are the reasons why:
1) Paid $100 for a trial which included a free eyebrow trim and free eyelashes/eyelash application. Told her specifically that my Fiance requested not to have my makeup cakey for our engagement session AND wedding day. My makeup started cracking infront of my FI’s eyes while taking our engagement pix. Also, she has it posted all over the web that she’s an eyebrow specialist. I specifically left my eyebrows untouched before the trial but all she did was pluck a couple of hairs. Definitely disappointed and seriously thought it was false advertisement. Oh and realized the free eyelashes she’s including are the REALLY cheap ones that you can probably buy for 99 cents.
2) Called her right after the engagement session to ask her for a re-trial since I was stressing out my makeup wouldn’t turn out right on the day of. She agreed and schedule me for another appt. Day before our appt she emailed me to confirm BUT now she’s telling me it will cost me another $100 for the 2nd trial. Are you kidding me? How much does that MAC makeup cost? Cancelled the trial of course and now stressing out even more to be dealing with such a person and not knowing how my makeup will turn out on the most important day of my life.
3) Day of, she gets there 30 min early, which was great. But my makeup was definitely not the calibur that I had expected or even worth the $200 that I had paid. Aside from the airbrush I could’ve done my makeup myself. Also, she Valet parked her car and expected me to pay for it. None of the vendors I hired (i.e. hairstylist, photographer, videographer, etc) charged their Valet parking on me. Horrible…horrible…horrible.
4) Last but not least. When I booked her, her website was advertising a free eyebrow trim and eyelashes/eyelash application with the trial and day of makeup. But because she changed it on her website months after I booked her (now you have to pay for an eyebrow trim and eyelash application) she made sure to email me that if I wanted to get my eyebrows done by her that there will be an additional charge. Well I guess it was a good thing that I thought her eyebrow trimming skills were mediocre so I made sure to get it trimmed elsewhere otherwise she would’ve had another chance to swindle me for more money.
Anyway, I don’t like to give out bad reviews but I really felt brides should be warned against vendors like this taking advantage of other people. Make sure you know who you’re dealing with before you sign a contract. Learn from my mistake.
