Was your proposal a surprise?

When Mr. Bee and I arrived at the wine bar where we first met, our waiter was acting so nice and nervous, that it was a dead giveaway Mr. Bee was going to propose.  I knew it was going to happen that weekend, but I didn't know when until that moment.

Did you know that your FI was going to propose, or was it a total surprise?

I had a vague idea that it was going to be soon, but it was a total surprise.  I walked in on a Monday evening after work (wrapped up in my parka, it was -35 below!) and the apartment was oddly quiet and decorated all over the place with like, a billion paper hearts!  It was crazy.   Then I kind of knew something was up, haha.

I knew my FI was going to propose on his 2 week trip home from Iraq, but I didn't know exactly when. I figured it'd be the first couple of days since we wanted to pick out the setting together and pick out our venues. I really didn't want to do all that by myself and make the call while he was deployed. Every where we went, I expected it. We went to a park, and I just KNEW it was going to happen but i didn't know when. I figured it out when he wanted to "sit on a bench and chat". He was acting nervous and his palms were sweaty, but I didn't want to ruin his surprise for him. I think women just know when something is up

I was mostly surprised because we had been talking about not getting an ering. I told him I was fine not having one as long as I got to pick out a fancy schmancy diamond wedding band. And all along he was in the process of designing and buying my ering! And he took the day off to spend with me which should have clued me in, but it didn't. I said mostly surprised because about a week earlier, I asked him if since we were planning the wedding, are we officially engaged? And he said not yet and changed the subject. But I was totally surprised with the ring. It's gorgeous and he did a fabulous job!

Within a year or two of dating I knew the FI was the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with. But because of many reasons -mainly family- engagement did not happen till long afterwards. EIGHT years! When family issues were gone I started to grow antsy but we agreed we would wait another year or two to save up some more money, both be a little more stable in our job conditions. Fast forward.

We had talked about getting away for a weekend with our puppy but kept putting it off, well finally we both said lets just do it! And we did and I booked it for Valentines Day because we will get free champagne and chocolate with it. I'm ALL for anything free. The FI gave me a little crap -just teasing- about it because he HATES Valentines Day. A friend actually teased me if I thought he would propose that weekend and said no way. He hates Valentines Day he would never propose on Vday, it'll be too cliche.
Well, he did. He proposed at midnight (so it would've been late the night before and officially Valentines Day) and I never ever saw it coming. When he initially asked I thought he was kidding around like we always do then I saw he was down on one knee and I freaked out.
I absolutely never thought it would come right then and there. But it was absolutely perfect. Even better is that my whole family knew about it since Christmas because the sweetheart of a FI actually asked my family for permission to marry me. :) So, yeah, I've never been happier to be the only one not in on a secret because everyone close to us knew. His family, my family, our closest friends.

I thought he was going to propose the next day as he had a whole dinner date thing planned, but instead he did it when we were out at my parent's cabin, which couldn't have been a more perfect location!

I was totally surprised by the proposal - although we had been discussing marriage and had looked at rings, I couldn't believe what was happening on an otherwise VERY stressful Friday and workweek.  Looking back I saw how he had slowly planted the seeds and plotted but I had no clue!!

I was incredibly surprised... We hadn't talked marriage or looked at rings.  I actually asked him, "Are you kidding me?"

Romantic, I know...

Yes because last August I thought that I would have to drop obvious hints prior to getting engaged (ex.  I think we should get married...that obvious).  I was planning on doing that the next time we got to see each other in October.

Well, apparently he was thinking the same thing, so before he left England to see me, he told his family he was going to propose.  When he got to the States, he convinced me to buy a bottle of our favorite champagne and popped the question the next night in my apartment!  I was in a happy haze for the rest of the time he was here.  YAY!

We had discussed getting married at length, but I was totally 100% surprised by the proposal. I knew it was coming, sooner then later, but when he got down on two knees, I was totally shocked, and totally amazed at how he surprised me.

We had taked very little about rings and actually the Wednesday before he proposed I finally for the first time made him sit down and look at a few rings online ... little did I know that he had just picked up the ring THAT DAY!!  He said he just had to try so hard not to laugh because the ring I showed him (honestly the first time we had actually looked at rings together, he really wanted to do it on his own!) was nearly exactly the ring he chose. Yeah I've got a good one, he knows jewlery :)

We had been talking about getting engaged summer of '08, and then moved it up to winter of '07.  I knew when he called my parents and his parents for their blessing because I was in the other room.  And when we went to his parents' house for Christmas, I saw him in the jewelry store with his dad while I was supposed to be across the street shopping for his Christmas present.    I knew it was going to be on New Year's Eve at midnight, but the ring was a complete surprise.  I like that I was aware of the proposal even though he planned everything, and I liked that the ring was something he picked out on his own and surprised me with.

I was completely surprised even though my FI had been dropping hints. We were Christmas shopping with my mom when my FI "suddenly" thought it would be fun to pretend to be getting engaged and at look at rings at this fancy-pants jewelry store. We had talked about waiting a while to get married, so I thought this was some cruel joke on my mom. Turns out he wanted to know what kind of ring I liked! He had me convinced that it was all joke, so when he proposed three months later, I was completely floored.

I was totally surprised by my proposal. My FI and I had been talking about marriage for several months, and I didn't have any expectations. We actually had an arguement about getting engaged a week before he proposed. He had planned it like that, so that my mind would be so far from the idea.

Sort of!  I found the receipt for the ring by accident one day, and that shocked the hell out of me.  So then I knew it was coming, but I didn't know when.  I thought it would be on a certain date, but he did it a few weeks before that.  So yes and no.  :)

I knew it was going to be that week, because I knew he had been to the jewelry store, but the actual moment was a surprise. What I didn't know was that he had the ring (hidden in his car, doesn't seem safe haha). Anyway he was going to do it on a Wed night after my late class, but I had a meeting, so I messed up his more elaborate plan. We had been out with friends the Friday before, and when we got home, he just decided to do it spontaneously, on one knee, in the middle of the street. It was perfect!!

My FI and I picked out the ring together so I knew it was going to happen, but 3 months passed before he popped the question so I was still surprised!

I didn't think it was going to be, but he totally pulled a "not ready for marriage" fake out and fooled me!

I honestly had no idea.  The only thought I had was when we were sitting in the cruise terminal and I  brushed up against the pocket he had the ring in, but as soon as I thought it I got it out of my head cuz I didn't want to make myself crazy.  It was great that he went to so much trouble to lie and make it a surprise for me.  Its the only time I condone lying ;)

I was completely surprised... it was labor day weekend and we were at a friends party. That weekend we were also going away to Hershey Park.. He left the party to quote "go pick up some clothes" since we were leaving very early the next morning. Well needless to say he was gone like 3 hours and i flipped.. It was HIS friends party and I was there alone.. I couldn't understand (little did I know he was picking up the ring). I kind of ruined the location of the proposal. After a long day of hershey park i just wanted to leave and eat!!! he wanted me to stop at a lil shop in the park n i refused. (silly me, he wanted to propose right in front of the fountain) .... couple hours later in our hotel room.. he got down on 1 knee and i was like "WHAT R U DOING!!"... then end.

I realize now all the little things he did... i had even grabbed his leg at one point n felt a box  but didn't put two and two together!

I wasn't really surprised.  We had talked about getting engaged sometime before the end of the year.  I was surprised as to how he did it. I figured he would do it in a more private setting, but he did it in front of his entire family on Christmas!

I was shocked!  There's a lot going on for both of us right now, and I was starting to get antsy.  We'd spent a lovely evening hanging out at home, and I was actually thinking that things were going so well I might be able to bring up the fact that I'd like to get married in the next, say, year and a half and see how that went over.  Instead, he proposed and caught me totally off guard.  Like dannyb417, the first words out of my mouth were "are you sure?"

It was a total surprise.  I had no clue.  After seven years together, we talked a little bit about marriage, but we both agreed that it would be at least 6 more months until an engagement.  He surprised me with the ring about a month after that.  He didn't even know he was going to do it until he bought the ring on an impulse buy 4 days before the proposal.

I was not the slightest bit surprised. I knew he had bought the ring, and when he asked me to leave a certain weekend free so we could go away overnight, I knew it was so he could propose. I'm the trip planner in our relationship, so that was a dead give away. And then, if any possibility of surprise had remained, the hostess at our bed and breakfast would have squashed it. As soon as we arrived, she very awkwardly took FI into the hallway to make arrangements for the champagne she was supposed to deliver to our room while we were at dinner! I've never seen anyone less subtle in my life! It was actually kind of hilarious, as I waited in the room and pretended to have spontaneously gone deaf. But the lack of surprise in no way dampened my enthusiasm, or how touched I was that he had gone to all that trouble. I actually think it made it even more special for me -- knowing all day and all evening what it was leading up to.

Oh, and I was SUPER relieved to find out that he had already called my dad and asked/warned him!

I had an idea that my FI was going to propose on our trip to Boston.  However, I most definetely did not know when it was going to happen. I didn't figure it out up until a few minutes before he actually proposed. We had a beautiful dinner and asked if I wanted to take a walk through the Commons (a park out there).  We stopped by the George Washington monument and he kept looking around.  I was like what is wrong with him.  He seemed really nervous...still no clue.  Then he started with the, "Since I've met you, you've turned my life around.  You are the best thing that has ever happened to me..." When he said those words, I was like "oh my God this is it, Focus, focus..."  When he got down on his knee, I couldn't believe it.  The funny thing is afterwards he was like do you like the ring.  I was like "Oh I love it, I can't see it (because it was a dark night), but I love it...LOL
