We just bought a top-loading, HE washer and dryer from GE. We love it generally but the washer is making a whistling/whining sound when it’s washing. My brother likes to compare it to the sound of small children screaming. We called the repair guy out and he said the sound is normal. I can’t stand it though so I’m looking for recommendations for a new washer/dryer set. Anyone have one that they love (preferably a quiet one)? Any tips on machines to avoid? Thanks!

Sorry, but in my opinion, GE anything is the worst. I have a front loading washer and dryer made by Maytag. They are from the Neptune series. I have had them for just over 10 years and they are awesome. Another very good brand is Kenmore.

our dryer took a crap 2 weeks ago and we got the LG 7.1 cu ft dryer:
It is very quiet and dries clothes so quickly! We plan to get the matching washer when our current top loader goes out. They were in a decent price range, also. They are not a base model, but not top of the line.

I have a front loading washer by Amana. We bought it almost 3 years ago, and it runs like a champ. No whistling/screaming child noises either 😉 Amana is owned by Maytag — they’re reliable, but less expensive.

We bought a front loader Maytag around Thanksgiving ’10 and haven’t had any problems yet. I like that you can put a load in and then set a delay. I’ve set it right before bed and then put the load in the dryer when I get up. I’ve also set it in the morning so that it’s done when I get home. We got the matching gas dryer. We got a really good deal on this set and got the pedestals for free. I wouldn’t recommend a front loader without the pedestals.
