@simpleandchic: I was at Columbia, which I believe was the second place facebook opened. I remember it kind of being more like a way to meet people on campus, rather than a way to connect with old friends. I went on a date with a guy I met on Facebook my freshman year, actually.
I haven't seen the social network and I don't think my university was one of the first to get facebook, but I do know that when we first got it you could only be friends with people at your university so it was pretty limited. A few months later it expanded so you could be friends with people at any university that had gotten it and they had announcements on the homepage telling which universities had just gotten it. It was also really basic back then. I remember it being a big deal when you could upload photo albums. :)
I believe it was either late 2003 or very early in 2004 because my boyfriend at the time was going to school in Boston at Babson College and it was one of the first schools to have facebook as well. I cant remember whether or not you could be friends with people at other schools but I remember that the facebook profile was very simple and way different than it is now!
@elivt: I was at CU too when FB started (I graduated '05)! As freshmen we even had a Facebook to get to know other members of our class...i.e. an actual bound book. I got FB in 2004 when it was all just Ivies, and all you had was a wall, your profile pic, and clubs/organizations. I remember being so excited when it opened to other schools and some of my HS friends could join....then it opened to HS students...then to everyone, and my mom joined....LOL.
There was a newspaper article about FB's early "rival," CUCommunity, which I remember some folks being a part of as well. It's so weird to have these sort of retrospectives, they make me feel so old!
Definitely 2003. FB founder lived in the same suite as one of my high school friends freshman year...facebook was started sophomore year, so that would have been in 2003 (we graduated HS in 2002). I remember when it came to my campus at Kenyon in like 2004, when you still had to have a valid college email address to sign up.
Yeah it came to my college (University of Hartford) in late 2004 when I was a freshman. You had to have a college email address to sign up - its crazy that it is everyone now...I liked it SO much better when it was just for college kids! Although that wouldnt apply to me now so I guess I want it to be everyone!
I graduated Spring of 04 from a MA state school. We had facebook but it was limited to the school and you had to have an official school email adress. It was nothing like it is now.
I think FB started earlier than 2003. I was in college from 98-02 and one of my good friends was at Harvard (same time). He's always been anti-FB because he didn't like it when he was in school.
I signed onto it I think in late 2004. At that point it was beyond the Ivy leagues but still just for bigger schools. I didn't really "get it" at first but my roommate talked me into signing up on it.
I also signed up in '04...through UCLA but didn't use it because I was out of school.
Fh was at Baylor during that time when that hubub was going on with the BU admins holding out. He said it created a huge stir when it was finally allowed.
I haven't seen the movie but my bf was at Harvard and was in Mark Zuckerberg's (sp?) class. I don't think he knew Mark (if he did it was a passing acquaintance) but he did use early facebook to pick up BU girls.
