At 6w4d I had an abdominal u/s and they told me to drink 32 oz 1 hour before. I drank maybe 16 oz and peed before and they were still able to see baby and heartbeat.  If you’re further along it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

@urchin:  Ohh gotcha, sorry for the assumption. I still think you’re fine – your bladder should be full but not uncomfortably so!

If you don’t have enough water they wont get a clear picture and you may have to redo it.

@Trixxie_90:  +1. My friend didn’t drink enough water early enough and had to go back for a second appointment. I’d just do what they directed and get it over with – they create the directions for a reason!

@urchin:  I went in for this for ovarian cysts and I don’t actually remember a specific amount though I’m sure there was one, I drank a lot of water! I think if you drink enough that your bladder feels close to “full” that should be good, like not so much that you HAVE to pee but you know that you could, if that makes any sense? I had both a trans-vaginal ultrasound and a abdominal ultrasound. They went quickly, thankfully and I was able to pee immediately once they were done. There was a bathroom in the ultrasound room.

@urchin:  If you drink it too close to the exam the water wont have reached your bladder yet and it’ll be for not.

@urchin:  Yay!  I usually am a little under whenever I’ve had ultrasounds, because otherwise I just start throwing up.

I’ve heard from women who ended up with too much and are told to ‘just pee a little’.
