well the venue cant control where other corporations legally build condos, its not like they set out to ruin their business and reputation by this. have you phoned the venue to enquire, you cant be the only bride going thru this so maybe there are alternatives they already have in place
I am curious, how long ago did you visit this venue to miss construction of an entire condo? I have this feeling that even though the view is so important I almost feel not surprised that they didn't let people know. I don't know why I feel that way though, I think I'd have to see it in person, I mean it's not all about the background when you're outside, you know? And it could have rained and the outside could have been pointless. But I understand your frustration
@stor: Maybe I'm a little confused, have you had your wedding already or will you have your wedding in July 2011 (as your name says). Either way, I am sorry this happened to you. I hope that it gets better for you.
No it was the venue that decided to build the condos in front of a beautiful view. I'm getting married there in a couple weeks and just as devastated. I was down there today and the building is hideous! Its not right, they're ruining weddings and now its too late to cancel. We're paying top dollar to get married at a construction site!
uch, that's awful. They really should have told you that this was construction was going on. :-(
@Ms Spitfire: not to sound rude, but I think suggesting the OP find a different venue with 6 weeks to go, during prime wedding season, is a bit ridiculous..
I think it's justified to be upset that you paid for a site with an ocean view, & then they decide to do construction, take away that ocean view, & don't inform you? Not okay. The church we're getting married in is having construction done & a person from the church called me a 2-3 MONTHS ago, letting me know this was going to be happening around the time of our wedding, but assured me it would not interfere with our wedding & they would be sure to have it complete by June 25. She just didn't want me to hear second hand from someone else about it & freak out. THAT'S what a decent venue would have done; let them know about the construction before they signed the contract, or at least have the decency to tell them about it with advance notice if they wanted to switch venues, or offer an alternative contingency plan that would satisfy all parties involved.
@Ms Spitfire: um hello?? Have you ever planned a wedding?
It is next to impossible to move a reception with 6 weeks to go. Not to mention, these couples picked this location for it's WATER views and the venue management made a decision that virtually destroys what they've paid for.
have you ladies called the venue? Or gone down there and confronted them over this? I'd DEFINITELY be pissed and demanding a refund or alternate location!!!!
sooooo sorry you've gotta deal with this!!!!
The venue has offered some enhancements during cocktail hour and dessert. Thats it, its BS. There was no call, no email...NOTHING! I would NEVER had my wedding there if I knew there was going to be this huge eye soar. They scammed me along with a lot of other brides.
@Lovetoshop: Did you just change your name? Are you the OP or someone else..
Have you talked to a lawyer? If what you paid for is a ocean view, and they are not delivering they may be at fault and therefore owe you the deposit back at the minimum.
just out of curiosity, what is the name of this place? I google "water's edge" and get A TON of hits and in different states!!!
@Zinzerena: I think its in Conneticut since its on that board. When I type waters edge into google thats the first place that comes up. I am guessing thats where it is although I am not exactly sure.
If my venue did this I wouldn't be happy, try to get some money back or get some perks (massages anyone?) but it is still not okay to do this to someone. A decent venue would notify someone of the construction especially since you picked the place for its views. Is there any other place on the property (that has ocean views) where you can get married (not at the gazebo). Could it be fixed that way or is that the only place they let people get married at.
No I'm the OP I just unfortunately happen to be getting married there too. Its in Westbrook, CT. The construction is so large (4 story condos) thats its an eye soar no matter where you are on the property. Sux!
Suggestions to find another venue are ridiculous. Venues on the Connecticut shoreline book up two years in advance. I am horrified at what Water's Edge are doing, how awful.
@plantains: The fact that someone even suggested that the OP find a new venue is absolutely ridiculous.
OP - your situation is terrible. You should definitely get more than just a few cocktail hour enhancements. I would write a letter to the highest management person there to start.
Its way too late and an inconvenience to find another venue. All RSVP's are in. Guests have already booked rooms, some have even prepaid at other hotels to get a discount. It's too late to do anything. I was even thinking of shuttling guests to a church so they at least don't have to look at a hideous construction site, but then thats an additional cost and then finding a church with limited time...not gonna happen. Water's edge are thugs with a smile that promise a perfect wedding day only to find out your going to have a redneck wedding next to a construction site. I feel robbed and conned and it's too late to do anything. Can someone please bomb the building? Thanks for letting me vent!
Just wondering-does your contract specify waterview? That's just all kinds of awful. Do you know any lawyers? :(
The more I think about it, the more I think you should contact the Courant or one of the news stations with this story. I feel so terrible for all of the brides impacted by this :(
Its also a bit of a kick in the pants that the website still has the beautiful gazebo with the ocean views that im guessing arent there anymore!
@Miss Sydney: I am DOC for a wedding there in a couple of weeks. That gazebo now overlooks the condos everyone are discussing. It's really awful and I am currently trying to get a contract cancelled for another bride for next June.
There still is a waterview, its just right in between a couple of buildings. It's more of a "peak" of the beach. This is how they are saying they haven't violated their contracts.
This really sucks. Is there anywhere else on the property that is acceptable to you that you might be able to convince them to let you have it? It usually seems like big resorts like that have multiple ceremony sites.
I'm getting married at the gazebo at Water's Edge, so I know EXACTLY what you are going through. I stopped by there today and wanted to cry. When we signed our contract, we were told the outside of the new building would be completed by April - here we are, almost mid August, and there are tarps covering large areas of the building, holes in the ground surrounded by plastic orange construction fences, and those couples getting married in the lawn/beach area will have a great view of the row of porta-potties on one side.
I highly do not recommend Water's Edge to anyone. All they have to offer is their location, and now with the construction, they have nothing. We have been waiting for a call back from management for days, and nothing. You just have to laugh about it, though - we're looking forward to an awesome wedding with friends and family!
You are definitely staying positive! I was on the verge of a breakdown after I saw the construction. I too was promised the building would be finished by May only to walk next to a construction site with green pyrex framing on my June 25th wedding. My wedding night turned out amazing, but if I had honestly been told I would of never gotten married there. The reason I chose Water's Edge was for the view and that was ruined.

Wow I'm so shocked to hear this! Thankfully this isn't my venue, but I am familiar with the site and know that this is a pretty popular place. You can also call News Channel 8, maybe they can do a segment on it. It seems so unfair that they didn't even give you a heads up about the building. I'm sure they knew about it long in advance. Also you can post negative reviews on sites like weddingreports.com and weddingwire.com. Eventually this will catch up to them and they will lose since no one will want to get married there!
If its not too late, perhaps maybe look into having your wedding ceremony inside. I know its sucky compared to having it infront of the water in a gazebo, but its better than looking at port a potties and tarps. Best of luck to you.
@erin62511: You should post about your experience on weddidng wire and wedding reports. Right now they still have 5 out of 5 stars.

Water's Edge has RUINED my wedding!!! They failed to notify us of MAJOR construction that was happening. We were promised an ocean view for our ceremony at the gazebo. A friend from work just happened to go to Water's Edge a month before my wedding and brought back pictures to show me. The gazebo where the ceremony was to take place no longer had a water's view. Now there is a huge, ugly condo as the background. We no longer have beautiful water's view wedding pictures. Instead, we have an ugly building behind us and our wedding party. Water's Edge never even notified us that this was happening. Not only was our one special day ruined, but we have wasted thousands of dollars. We NEVER would have gotten married there if we knew this. Water's Edge is a TERRIBLE wedding resort and we would NEVER recommend them. They ruined our wedding day!!!
