ebates is amazing! i've cut my shopping down hardcore, but i still get at leats $20 bucks back from them every few months.
I negotiated with EVERY vendor. My venue and three of my vendors had published "minimums." All four cut those minimums significantly when I asked nicely and made my case for why they should. But, the key to my negotiations was that I was willing to move on to a different vendor if they said no. It made it a pleasant experience, because I always went into negotiations with a "it's worth a try" attitude.
Also, ask people who have knowledge and experience for help. I was wandering around Paper Source a couple of months ago, pricing out invitations. One of the workers asked me what I was working on and I told her. She came up with a brilliant option that I wouldn't even have known existed, if it weren't for her (Bargain Bin Flat Letterpress Cards...wahoo!). I had been looking in Clearance, not realizing there was a Bargain Bin hidden in a corner of the store.
@candykiss: Great post, loving the ideas!

Figured I'd write this post with some things I've been learning along the way to help you gals save some $$ on your wedding!
1. Negotiate- It is awkward but ask your vendors what deals they have. Maybe your florist knows a flower that looks similar to your first choice but is half the price. Or your videographer may meet a competitors price. This has saved us a lot!
2. DIY doesn't mean cheaper- Just because you did it yourself doesn't mean its cheaper! Sometimes its worth paying someone to get the job done right. I have found that "partial" DIYs are the way to go. For our save the dates, for example, I bought invitation kits and used the RSVP cards as the save the dates, and the invitations will be our menus. This saved me a ton of time and actually wound up costing about the same as ordering cardstock and having to trim it all up.
3. Research- Surfing the web is your friend. Read all the reviews. While I do love Michaels and other craft stores, its not always the best deal. The invitation kits mentioned above I actually wound up getting from Kohls.com. I had a 30% off coupon to Kohls, earned Kohls cash, and also get cash back through ebates.com. Ebates.com is a cash back website that has saved me atleast a hundred bucks or two on wedding stuff. Instead of going directly to a store's website, go to ebates.com first. They list coupon codes and give you cash back for purchases you make. Orbitz.com is even on there and helped us save some moolah on our honeymoon!
