Hey ladies! Time for the 2nd checkin, even though i think most of us finished the book way before now (: it was so hard to put down!!

    1. Were you surprised that Rosie was the one to kill August?

    2. Do you think Uncle Al killed himself or that he was murdered?

    3. Were you disappointed with how the story ended?

    4. Is there anything about the story that you wouldve changed?

**Please feel free to post anymore questions you may have or would like to discuss.**

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. i wasn't really surprised that Rosie killed August. He had it comin.

    2. At first, i thought Uncle Al had killed himself...but i read on and it sounded like he was murdered. I know he had a lot of people that were angry at him. maybe i need to reread that part? :)

    3. I was a little disappointed with how the story ended. I didnt think the older Jacob's point of view was important at all. & i was kind of sad that it ended with him. I think the book couldve been written with only the younger jacob's point of view and been just as good, if not better. & i then the ending couldve been more about his and marlena's life together.

    4. I wish Sara Gruen wouldve translated the Polish that was written throughout the book. It kind of annoyed me that i didnt know what any of it meant.

It was a fantastic book! I'm really glad that it was chosen for this month!! Can't wait to start a new book :]

    1. I can't say that I was too surprised that Rosie killed August. I didn't think Marlena had it in her to kill him herself. Plus he was so mean to Rosie, and they don't forget things like that.

    2. I think Uncle Al was murdered. I think that all of the guys that got redlighted came back to get their revenge.

    3. I really loved the ending, but I think they should have ended it with the actual circus instead of Jacob's current life. I agree that I would have liked to hear about Jacob and Marlena's life together.

    4. Yeah, I agree with changing the Polish language. I had no idea what they were saying to Rosie which was tough. Obviously whatever they were saying to her were nice things, or else she wouldn't respond. She should have put that in there, I think.

I'm excited and anxious for next month's book!! :] Thanks for hosting @Mrs. Menard!!

    I really enjoyed this book.

    1. Not surprised at all that Rosie killed August. He definitely had it coming. And I agree that I don't think Marlena had it in her even though she really wanted to kill him.

    2. I think Uncle Al was murdered. Definitely one of the guys who got redlighted. Not surprised that he ended up getting murdered.

    3. I wasn't disappointed in how the book ended. I liked the parts with the older Jacob. It was a good parallel between his life now and how he was treated similarly to how the animals were treated by some of the people in the circus. He was treated like he didn't know what was going on and that he was too old to do anything. Rosemary was like the younger Jacob in that she listened to him and tried to help him. She understood that he wasn't a stupid person who should just be ignored. And I liked how he ended up working in the circus again--his life came full circle.

    4. I agree that the Polish being translated would have been nice. And I do think that it would have been nice to hear more about the lives of Jacob and Marlena once they left the Benzini Brothers and joined Ringling and after the circus. But I liked the story and don't think it was bad that those things weren't there.

    1. I was surprised that it was Rosie that killed August. I thought it was Marlena. She seemed to have reached the end of her rope and was ready to do almost anything to be able to escape him by that point.
    2. There is no way (in my mind) that Uncle Al was murdered. He got what was coming to him and completely deserved it.
    3. I thought the ending was awesome. Jacob got what he wanted in the end and wasn't stuck in the nursing home where there was no one left to truly care for him.
    4. I have to agree with what you gals said about the tranlations and finding out more about their experience with the Ringling Bros and later on, but I guess that's a story for another time. I really liked this story overall and wouldn't have really changed much, except for captions on the circus pictures. Like I said before, I felt that it would have been a bit nicer to have that included. I felt like they really glossed over Kinko's death and didn't seem nearly as upset about it as I felt he would have been. Also, there was no real mention of Camel's son missing meeting up with his father.

Would anyone like to volunteer for next month? I wouldn't mind doing it if nobody else wants to.

@Mrs. Menard- I thought the same thing! I had never heard of the book so I was thinking that it was just going to be some average read. I'm glad I was wrong!!
