Last week DF and I went to order his wedding ring at the mall(Which we won't have till 2 weeks before the wedding, assuming the order goes smoothly. Crazy man!) and then we headed to the pet store like we always do.
A trip to the pet store generally goes like this:
Me: "Lets hold a..."DF: "No. No dog."Me"But..."DF: "Dogs are smelly and a lot of work, we're not getting a dog."Me: *pout*
BUT, last weekend it went like this
Me: "Awww!! Look at the pomeranian, lets hold him"DF: "Ok"Me: (Confused and suspicious) We pet the dog, we each ask questions about the breed, the cost, yada yada...DF says we can get it that day...I said no! I said we should talk about it more! Next thing I know we're signing papers for a puppy.
We clearly don't know what we're doing, but he's been to the vet, he has everything he needs and we're really trying our best.
Gizmo:

Absolutely Adorable. I love when they're fluffy like that. Good luck with your puppy!!
So sweet!
Congrats!
You will figure everything out just remember to be consistent with training and take him to puppy school. A tired puppy is a happy puppy so exercise him appropriately!
:) so damn cute! I have a pom too. We used to call him gizmo cuz he looks like the gremliin when we hold him in the air.
.proud pom mommy.
Adorable! We've been wanting a pup too, but know that right now is not the ideal time for us. :(
For all those commenting on the pet store purchase, I agree with you, but what's done is done, so please don't get all judg-y on the OP.
@daydreamwanderer: totally agree.
what a cute lil fluffball!
He is so cute!! I'd love to have an animal in theory but our apartment is too small for us, let alone an animal also.
@daydreamwanderer: agreed!!
He is adorable...FI and i are in the process of finding a new pup for after we get married!
He's super cute! Love his name. I really like the color of his fur, too! I wish you the best of luck, and I hope nothing bad comes of his pet-store beginnings :) He's adorable!
Very cute. What's done is done, but next time please think twice about supporting these places.
The dog is adorable and just too cute. But really, people PLEASE stop "buying" puppies!
And whoever said "don't be judgy"...um, when you post something on a board, you need to be prepared for comments. That is kind of the point of a board. Don't expect every post you make to be all sunshine and roses. Life isn't like that.
PLEASE PEOPLE, STOP BUYING PETS FROM A PET STORE!!!!!!
Yes, he is from a pet store. I've adopted and rescued(and re-homed) many cats, one of which was terminally ill...this time we bought.
Thank you all :) He's still getting used to his crate, he loves walks and we're looking into puppy training. Petsmart provides it but I was thinking about using a private trainer, I've heard they are better at training and have more background?
It's alright everyone. I undesrtand that everyone has their views :)
I don't think this particular thread is the place to go off on a tangent, lord knows views on pet-store animals is a thread of it's own
But if people feel the need to share their views it's fine with me, either way DF and I will still have our healthy, happy, loved puppy.
puppy stores = puppy mills = animal abuse.
be part of the solution and adopt from a shelter.
We used a private trainer (or rather a business) but the class was through the local rec center. It is great. We just fininshed the beginners class and this summer we will do some of the other classes to continue training.
I want to do the nose class for companion dogs. So instead of training them to sniff out drugs, we do herbs.
I also wan to do an agilty class for companion dogs.
If you look into classes ask if they focus on companion dogs or show dogs. It will be a very different class. If you dont plan to show your dog, which I suspect is the case, you wont need or probably enjoy the rigidity of a show focus class.
@lefeymw: No, we don't plan to show him. I just want basic puppy training and have heard mixed reviews on petsmart training...
@Miss. Meeps: I agree with what you said. But we need to get out and educate the public, too! Since I started my involvement with animal rescue, I've been overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge the general public has about pet stores.
My apologizes for the thread jack and peeing on the cute puppy parade :(
For future referrence, or for reference for other readers who may not know this: Responsible breeders do NOT sell to pet stores. Most of these dogs come from puppy mills. A few come from backyard breeders or "whoops" litters. Many are registered with puppy mill registries (bascially anything other than the AKC or CKC is a puppy mill registry in this country - IF the CKC stands for Candadian Kennel Club; the Continental Kennel Club is a puppy mill registry). Buying from these places only continues the puppy mill cycle. When there is no longer a demand, puppy millers will be forced out of business. I look forward to that day, and will continue trying to spread education until such a day occurs.
Also, there is nothing wrong with buying from a reputable breeder. Emphasis on the reputable part.
That being said, the damage has been done, (so to speak) and you have a new puppy in your lives. He is very cute. Congratulations! Hope he lives a long, happy, healthy life with you. In response to the training question: I have never enrolled a dog in a Petsmart/Petco class, but I have been in the store while they have been going on. Some of the trainers seem to know what they are doing, some don't. It depends on individual location and individual trainer. The thing that I don't like: very few stores have a seperate are for training. Most of them just kind of train in the aisles. I guess it teaches your dog to focus during distraction, I prefer to train my dog where I don't have to move when someone would like to look at the hamsters or the cat teasers or the collars...We found a local training center and had a great experience, although I knew almost everything they taught us. We went for the socialization aspect, since our boy was a rescue and had obviously been abused. If you aren't sure about a trainer, (Petsmart or private), ask to observe a class, (or if Petsmart, just go shop while a class is in session). If they have a problem with this, it's probably not some place you want to go.
I did a PetsMart training class with one of my dogs last year. It really, really depends on the trainer. I am friends with one (not the one who did our class) and he is awesome, experienced and has a lot of background. Our actual class trainer was also amazing; he had a LOT of experience, had previously specialized with specific behavioral problems and aggressive dogs, and has since gone on to the local PD to work with their K9 units (I think the PetsMart thing was temporary while he was working on that). Talk to the trainers and ask about their experience and background. A bad trainer is a bad trainer, and that could be at any training center. Just do a little research!
so cute!! congrats!! my parents had a pom, she was soo adorable. i suggest training classes asap! poms can get crazy with the barking if not trained correctly, so get on top of it early!
Oh, what a little teddy bear! I actually got my dog in a similar fashion. I saw and I bought her. Spontaneously. Sometimes you just fall in love.
