Her name is Spazzy ... trust me, it's fitting - she kept CW up most of the night last night (I'll sleep through anything).

Sorry guys - there's the pics - she's about 5 months ... litter trained (thank goodness) and has all of her shots.

As soon as we brought her home CW said "We started our family!"

Oh my goodness she is sooo cute!

A word of advice with females:  Get her fixed as soon as you can.  We learned this the hard way lol

Ut-oh, Dizzy - kittens arrive a little unexpectedly? We had a problem with that once! A stray wouldn't leave my parents' porch so my mom eventually fed her and took her in - then we had Easter kittens! It was exciting and overwhelming all at once!

We're debating getting her de-clawed ... any thoughts? I've never done this to any of my cats! It kind of makes me nervous and I'm not sure how I feel about it!

sooo cute! Dont declaw her please! Im really against it especially if she will be outdoors. Even if shes not outdoors if she does get out she has no way of defending herself. Others may dissagree, but I actually find it really cruel.

@july - I'm pretty sure it's too cruel to do, too. That's why my family never did it - I'm going to try to keep her from scratching with little tips and tricks I have researched - like a water mister and firmly saying "no" hopefully this will work over time!

Any tips to get her to stop scratching up my furniture? Or how about CW and I's hands?

Thanks to everyone who thinks she's cute - I am absolutely smitten with her. It hurt me to leave her at home tonight but we had to get to CW's fam's house so we can leave early from here tomorrow morning! Thankfully my mom agreed to check in on her and cuddle with her a bit!

@ali, no we didn't have the kitten problem..we got our male (her brother) fixed when he started spraying, right after she started going into heat.  Now, she's in heat 3 weeks of the month (SO annoying), and is excruiatingly territorial.  And when I mean territorial, I mean she hates me and pees on all of my things.  She's peed on a few of FI's things, but it's mostly stuff she sees me wearing/using (she loves the kitchen counter, and the Nature's Miracle we bought hasn't helped!)

As for declawing, don't do it.  It's horribly painful for the cats, and sometimes it can be done wrong, leading to permanent nerve damage.  There are better alternatives such as Nail Caps : http://www.softpaws.com/ They basically cover the claws so they don't scratch things, but allow the cats to keep their claws.  When they shed their claws (which is natural) the caps come off, and you just glue on more.

Well when I had my cat we just kept her nails trimmed and had the scratching posts. Alittle spray of water like you said always works good. Some cats are worse than others, but with all those things my cat was never that bad with scratching furniture. Kittens are worse than older cats as far as scratching people. Its like puppies and chewing. Good luck, and congrats shes a cutie!

July, you're right, every cat is different.  Our two were strays for about 3 months before someone picked them up, and we adopted them from that family for my birthday last year.  They still have a lot of their primal instincts, ie they hate being held and are relatively skittish (Delilah moreso than Hock).  We tried trimming their claws, because they get sharp! (we call Delilah "Little, Orange, and Pointy!) We couldn't hold them long enough to get one claw trimmed.  We just had to let it be, and FI has accepted his role as their scratching post (even though they have one!)

Dizzy its very true every cat has a different temperment. One of the best things to do if you get a cat while theyre young enough is get them used to you touching them. Play with their feet, ears, mouth etc. This way they get used to you touching them, and when you need to clip their nails or clean their ears or whatever they are ok with it. Trying to introduce an older cat to these types of things is pretty hard.

Yeah, that was our problem.  They were about 5 mos old when we got them, so it was a little late.  They're a year and a half and still don't like a lot of things.  I've been able to get Hock used to being held for a little bit (no longer than 30 seconds) but Delilah can't take it.  Oh well, I love them just the same :)

Most cats do great if you keep their claws trimmed and provide them with a scratching post. Declawing should be a last resort!

If you can, have a vet or vet tech show you how to trim her claws. Go too far up, and you could cut through soft tissue inside the claw. If you start now, and get her used to having her claws trimmed, she'll probably be just fine. A firm "no" and spray of water when she claws something she's not supposed to will help too.

Hi!! If I weren't allergic I would have become a cat lady for sure... I would just take all the homeless kitties home! I love them.

Don't declaw b/c you can never be certain that she will not get out - they have little covers for her claws - like clear covers that last and fall off as the claw grows and you get them redone.

Look into it! I know someone who has that on her cat and it's wonderful.

I had my little captain destructo laser declawed. It can be a good alternative to the traditinal declawing in that it only takes the claw not the knuckle AND the recovery time is much faster.......

    HI ADORABLE KITTY!!

I had a "used" cat (we adopted her from the shelter) and she was declawed... and it was super nice, but I am very against it unless your cat comes that way.  Our kitties use the Soft Paws, and they work well.

Oh, ETA: I have to second what someone else said - the declawing has another drawback that if the cat ever gets outside, she will have no way to defend herself.  My former cat, who was declawed, was a stray, but was fixed and had no claws, so she obviously had a home at some point.  Anyway, when we adopted her, she had awful, awful teeth, because she had been using her teeth and biting to defend herself since she had no front claws :(

Oh, she is sooo sweet!  I just got a new kitten, too.  We named her Lucy.  She's only about 2 months old, though.  LOVE HER.  (But I can totally relate to how you came up with the name of Spazzy for yours!!)

    Here she is.

this is the best post! haha.  I love your kitten's little pink belly!

As for claws - we have one declawed cat (cried for days on that one) and one non-declawed.  Don't worry, the declawed one is NOT at a disadvantage in a fight, he always wins despite the other's claws, and they never ever go outside.  Anyway - we have scratching toys in every main room - 2 in our bedroom (they get anxious for breakfast) and 2 in the living / dining area.  They follow us, so we put them where we are most often.  We carried around a tin full of coins and a water spray bottle for almost a year with our newest and fully clawed kitten.  When he was out of line, we sprayed him.  When he became immune to that, we shook the can of coins (loud! scared FH with that a few times too).  We also put a mixture of white vinegar and cayenne pepper on places that he wanted to scratch (sofa corners, carpet) and places he wanted to dig (he pooped in our flower planters, ugh).  This stopped the problem.  As for the pooping - we found a ton of pine cones and put them in our plants, too - so if he made it past the gross vinegar smell, he would be shocked to step on pine cones.  Cats hate that! haha.  IT's hard but it CAN be done.  I felt very bad about getting our first declawed, so i've been very diligent about clipping and maintaining the house so that we don't have to turn to that with the other.
