@SoontobeCJ:  Congratulations on your decision!

I am eloping this month!  Believe it or not, I will have eloped TWICE (my first marriage was 10 years ago).

Both times I did not have any family present.  Yes, I am an anomoly.

I TRIED to get them here, but my family is just really weird when it comes to weddings and I haven’t figured out why.  There’s just not a whole lot of care or concern in general.  I live a plane ride away which seems impossible to them, but yet I fly to them 2-4 times a year.  I also had a big wedding planned, which we cancelled 4 months before the date due to my dad’s terminal illness.

For the first marriage, I had two friends act as our witnesses.  We took them to lunch afterwards.  I just wore a skirt, he wore a sweater, nothing fancy, and we went back to work.  No honeymoon.

For this upcoming marriage, my fiance’s parents will be our two witnesses.  I have a wedding gown, FI has a suit, we’ll have a lovely wedding day with all the details, and we’ll be taking 11 days off to road trip to our destination.  The wedding will be while on the actual honeymoon trip!

Would I have liked my family there?  Yes, I would have, but it’s just not possible with those people, so our current plan is a pretty nice backup plan if I don’t say so.  Not to mention as low stress as you can get!

Not all states require witnesses however (Texas and Colorado come to mind).  Most places can provide you witnesses if you don’t have your own.

Congrats, I bet it will be wonderful!

We eloped two weeks ago. I don’t feel bad about family not being there because:

1) it was a second wedding for both of us 2) we hired a photographer and they’ll get to see pictures 3) it was about us, not them. Tongue Out

In Texas, you don’t have to have witnesses, so we didn’t.

Congrats!  I had a wedding but I think that there’s something about eloping that’s so romantic.  I only suggest you have a photographer there that can capture the moment for you and your friends and family (if you want to share with them) later.

We didn’t need witnesses in MD either. It was an encore for us and it was just us. We had the officiant and courthouse guards take pictures. We went to a little gazebo by a lake after and took our own pics with timer on camera. After that we went to our favorite restaurant and the waiter took pictures. After that to an outdoor club by the bay. The bartender took a few pics.

Yes I would have liked our grown children there but it would have made it difficult for them with their father. He doesn’t know we are married. We made our day special and it was wonderful.

We eloped, it was wonderful and I have NEVER regretted it for a single second!  Terribly romantic, wonderfully private and blessedly simple!  Immediate family only, and our photographers, there were two of them….I loved our wedding!
