SO and I are currently sleeping on a full-size futon and we’re looking to upgrade to a queen in the next few months. I think we prefer a firmer mattress although we haven’t gone “mattress shopping” yet.
We’re on a major budget though- I could probably spend up to $1000 unless that’s a ridiculously low budget and in that case I’ll just put it off a little longer. I do have a platform bed frame that I’d like to use rather than a box spring but I’ll consider the alternative. My platform is really high.. like 20 inches I think- but the legs could be trimmed if necessary.

If you’re a Sams Club member, they’re having a great sale on Serta Perfect Sleepers for $398! I only know this because we are looking at getting a new queen as well! Sorry if I am no help lol

Do you belong to Costco? You can order mattresses online from them. You can google to see where the same mattresses are to test them out.
Also, holiday weekends tend to have the best sales (up to 50% off) so you may want to determine what matress you want and then wait for a holiday (maybe the 4th?) before you go and actually buy it.

@kgirl91: When i was in a tight budget I went to Canadian tire and bought a mattress. It was in a huge box. ONe of those hyperallergenic ones, that have twisted single coils but not metal ones so it was folded.
It was a queen mattress and it was 500$
It was one of the most comfortable beds i slept on!
Im sure you could find similiar at Walmart ?

Oo, yep I forgot about Costco. We are members. I have not seen test mattresses in our warehouse though. No way am I buying a mattress without testing it out.

@kgirl91: This might or might not be your kind of thing, but I am highly pleased with it:
My FI needs a good deal of back support, so he bought a queen-size latex mattress on Amazon.com. Retail it would have sold about $2,500. We got it for $700-something and free delivery.
You don’t need a box-spring with it. The mattress arrived rolled up in a box with all the air sucked out of it (kind of like those garment bag commercials but on a major industrial scale). Then it went back to normal size after about 12 hours.
I don’t know the exact place he ordered it from, but this was something like it:
This is not a traditional, bouncy mattress. It’s made for people who want support and a nice firm bed.

@Bunny_the_Bride: That’s really interesting but what’s the return policy? I’d be scared to death of having to pay $500 to return it! I bought my futon online but it was cheap compared to a mattress.

I bought my mattress at Sears almost 2.5 years ago. It’s amazinggggg. It was only $250 too and it’s a pillowtop! I got it on sale at the end of the year. They currently have a sale now, too. 🙂

we got an awesome Queen memory foam mattress i believe its 11 inches deep at overstock.com for like $480. We have a platform bed as well and it works perfect without a box spring. We’ve had it now for almost a year and so far so good.

My #1 tip is do your research. I paid $300 for a queen mattress that has zero padding or anything. A week later, I saw an ad in the paper for a brand new pillowtop for $50 from a local furniture store. Check the paper and Craigslist. We’re registered for a memory foam mattress from Target that’s under $300, so I really hope that we get that.

@kgirl91: I am not sure about the return policy, but FI owned a mattress like this about ten years ago when he lived in a different state. He had the similar experience already and also made sure what he bought had mostly top customer reviews.
He felt safe buying it because the chances he would return it were very slim.
Most people are only happy buying a mattress in a store that they try out, so it’s not a purchase for everyone.

I had a basic Sam’s mattress and ended up buying one of the $150 memory foam toppers for it to make it more comfortable. Best deal ever.
