Hi Everyone!  I've been reading around on the boards here and we aren't sure where we want to go for our honeymoon in May 2012!   I was looking at the Sandals resorts in Jamaica first, but then someone said that Secret resorts may be better.  I'm very confused!  My fiance and I enjoy watersports, beach time, swimming, fine dining, pools, and nature excursions.  We will enjoy alcoholic beverages once in a while, but clubs/nightlife aren't really on our list of important things!  I've read that some resorts have rough water quite often, so that would really make us sad.  Having bad food would also be a downer.

Does anyone have any ideas about which resort would be best for us?  Are there any good travel sites with honest reviews?

Edit:  We aren't looking for all adventure all the time, though.  I can see our days spent relaxing on the beach, then snorkeling for a while, then talking at a swim up bar, eating at a nice restaurant, taking a stroll down the beach, maybe one spa treatment over the course of the honeymoon.  A day or two off the resort checking out nature or the island would be nice, but I don't want to go on ropes courses or runnning trails or anything too strenuous!

I did Sandals Whitehouse and had a great time. It was so relaxing, the people were beyond friendly. I used the spa, we vegged out. We did watersports when we felt like it and we were social once in a while. The food was yummy, especially the seafood!

DH and I went to Sandals Royal Bahamian.  We had an excellent experience, but I know of another bee on her that wasn't too impressed.  I will say that the private island made ALL the difference for us.  We spent the majority of our time there.

We're planning for a vacation in a few years and would like to go to Sandals La Toc in St. Lucia or possibly Sandals Negril.  They both looking amazing!

Also on my list of places I would like to go are Jalouise Plantation and Ladera (both in St. Lucia).

We went to Sandals Antigua and we LOVED it!!!! The resort had activities that were included.  Hobby cat sailing (which they provided lessons), snorkling, kayak's, etc.  They had eight or nine restaurant's/places to eat. One of the resturants "barefoot by the sea" was our favorite.  They have fire pits at night surrounding the restaurant and it was beautiful. Mmmm..lobster!  A couple restaurants had a view of the ocean.  I believe they were voted most romantic resort. We went on an excursion off the resort to go zip lining which was alot of fun.  Sandals also had a swim up bar. We thought a frozen drink called the "dirty banana" was pretty good. lol!  Resort grounds were well maintained.  The ocean was not rough when we were there. The beach was alittle narrow though, but we didn't mind.  They also offered us a free room upgrade when we got there. Good luck!

We are doing a Couples resort in Jamaica. There are 4 to choose from in Jamaica. After my own research, the price is cheaper and there are way more inclusions than other resorts. And it's all about couples and romance, which is totally great for a honeymoon. Check out their website. PM me if you want any more information from what I've found.

We went to Secrets Maroma Beach..and loved it.  I posted a recap post somewhere on here. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was great, and the beach beautiful.  We hung out on the beach during the day, swam in the amazing water, ordered food/drinks on the beach, then we'd go to the swim up bar in the afternoon and hang out there until going up to our room to get ready.  The service was also wonderful.  We walked along the beach some evenings before dinner, and enjoy some of the nightlife there if we were up for it.  I'd highly recommend it.

I also did a lot of research on the Couples resorts and it came down to a close tie of where we wanted to go between Secrets Maroma and Couples Swept Away in Negril.  That resort looks beautiful as well.  Good luck choosing your honeymoon destination - it is such a fun time in your life!  Enjoy the planning :)

What about the Gran Bahia Principe in Punta Cana, Ambar section (adults only) of the resort, but connectivity to the rest of the spot for all the options you could need for meals, things to do, etc?

We did Sandals Montego bay years back and LOVED it. Heading to Sandals Whitehouse for the Honeymoon. His family has also had expierences at 2 other Sandals resorts and came back with raving reviews. I don't think you can go wrong with Sandals.

FH and I are planning on going to Sandals Antiguar for our honeymoon. I hear Sandals is supposed to be the nicest and cleanest and includes more than the other "all inclusives"

We did Sandals St. Lucia and loved it. The 3 ressorts is a huge benefit as you have access to 3 differnt beaches and lots of restaurants so your chances of getting restaurant reservations. I did a (non-biased) review http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/st-lucia-sandals-review-time Hope that helps. Also, snorkeling is great because 2 ressorts go off sight and the Grande is on sight so you will at least get the chance to see 2+ areas if you sign up for the different snorkeling trips.

I have also stayed at Sandals Negril and Royal Carribean in Jamaica and I must admit, I was not sold on my first experience but not would def. go back to Sandals. Negril has the best beach of all their Jamaica properties but you also have a super long scary bus ride to get there from the airport (about 2 hours because they stop at a chicken shack). Royal had rough water all 3 days we were there so snorkeling was out.

In college I did a Spring Break trip to Breezes Bahamas and while it was also AI, the food was not as good as my experience with Sandals and motorized water sports were not included (i.e. water skiing and tubing).

    ALL are good.

have you thought about Puerto Rico!  I go to school here.  I know you dont want a beach but they have a rainforest you can hike in,  snorkeling expeditions, horse back riding on the beach, hang gliding, bioluminence bay, caves, fishing, parks, old cities, shopping and you can get a ferry to the islands Culebra and Vieques.  Here are some links

    @chittychittybanebane:

We looked at all of them and chose Sans Souci!  I really liked tower isle too.  That was our second choice!  I just wished the Isle was open to everyone after a certain time.  The nudie beach at Sans Souci is open to everyone after 5pm, yay! We don't party or anything, and I heard that San Souci is more for the relaxed crowd lol.  They all looked so nice that I don't think there is a bad choice for a couples resort!

We went to Sandals Antigua and it was FABULOUS. Swim up bars, snorkeling, clean beaches, jet skiing, couples massage, delicous food, huge pools, horseback ridingo on the beach, excellent staff... I just changed my background to a picture of the beach because I miss it so much. Oh girl, get yourself there.

We are pretty sure we are doing Sandals Montego Bay ... we compared Sandals to other all inclusives... and from what we found and what our TA told us, Sandals includes way more inclusives...

I'm seeing some here say Couples or Secrets do.. .just curious what additional inclusions you've found? I'm genuinely interested not challenging... scuba/snorkeling is the main thing we want to try and neither appear to be unlimited free at the others?

The only thing about Montego Bay is you will have air traffic all the time... you will be very close to the airport. I would suggest Sandals Negril, Best beaches, no airplanes!!

@CindyRelly:  The inclusions seem similar to me.  The price was a lot cheaper for Couples, though.  That's another thing that sold me, lol.  Once I'm done with school I'll plan more expensive vacations Wink

From what I understand, all Snorkeling is free and unlimited.  Here are the rules for SCUBA:

Dives are offered every day with a deep dive in the morning and shallow in the afternoon. On

Saturday, we offer a two tank dive in the morning only; night dives are offered, based on

availability ($50 additional charge.) Certified divers can dive once per day. A second dive in a

day is subject to availability.  Consider upgrading your certification while you are visiting by

taking an Advanced Course for an additional charge.

It looks like SCUBA is totally free unless you want a night dive or you are not certified.  I'm SCUBA certified, but my fiance is not and we don't have the money to pay for the lessons right now.  We are going to probably do the free crash course scuba lesson and one free dive for non-certified people.  You have to pay for extra dives if you are not certified.  I could do the free 1 dive per day without my Fiance, but I probably won't lol.  If he really really loves it, we will pay for an extra dive and think about certification for him in the future.

everything you described pretty described my honeymoon at Couples Negril in Jamaica!  it was FABULOUS! only adults only resort we have been to and we can't wait to go back.  and i have heard Couples Swept Away is just as good.   water is super calm. not too crazy of a night life, lots of activities, gorgeous beach, fine dining... seriously, every single detail you named above described our honeymoon, i would think you have been there already  ;)

@CindyRelly:  all the excursions we did were included (no extra fees) at Couples.  we did snorkeling, a catamaran cruise, wind surfing. you can even take a scuba lesson free and get your first dive free.

Yeah, I've heard about the long "commute" to the resort from the airport.  Honestly  don't think it will be that big of a deal.  Flying from here to Jamaica  and riding a bus is nothing compared to trips my Fiance and I have taken in the past as far as hours-traveling goes.

We went to Sandals the Grande Riveria in Ocho Rios. It truly was a magical expereince! Our requirements/intrests sound similar to yours, so this place might be a good fit for you. We are not be drinkers or partyers, but we liked all the swim up bars. We're really sporty and there was a ton of stuff to do like paddeling boarding and sailing. The food was great and we loved the staff! I had my birthday there too and they went above and beyond  - we felt so spoiled!

The ride from the airport was long but honestly we didn't really notice because we stopped for beef patties and beer and it was a great time too!!

    Good luck choosing!!

We just got back from our honeymoon at Couples Swept Away in Negril, Jamaica....let me just say it was AMAZING!!! The water was perfect, and the weather was even great too even though technically October is Jamaica's rainy month (we woke up to rain twice but then it cleared right up).  It was all inclusive and so relaxing!!  We are definitely going back someday!!

Sandals Grande St. Lucia!!! It's the best resort out of the 3. I went to a friend's wedding and it was just gorgeous. She wanted to wear  heels but still have the ocean and beach as a backdrop. There is a gazeebo in front of the water and looks like you're on the beach. There were a lot of weddings there and everyone is either on their honeymoon or visiting. I've noticed that you make a lot of friends since everyone is in the same boat. Def go on trip advisor to see what room fits you best. And if you do go here, make sure you fly into Vizie (sp?) airport NOT Hewanorra otherwise you have a 1 1/2 hr car or 15 min $$ helipcopter ride to the resort. Good luck!
