Wow that's absolutely gorgeous! Is there any way to know really far in advance what the exhibits will be? Like, could you get that information before booking, or do they not know that far in advance?
I think it is definetely dicey to have it at the gallery since you could end up with completely scary paintings behind you in all of your pictures. It's a gorgeous building but I know that I couldn't deal with not knowing what the art would be like behind me.
faint, it's stunning!! can you set up a tent with a dance floor outside or something like that? do they have a large veranda? also, there should be a way to know in advance what shows are scheduled.
It's gorgeous! It looks like a castle!
I agree with the other girls - can you see how far in advance you can find out the artist? How do they book them? You don't want scary sculptures or the inability to have control over the vibe your guests have.
And I LOVE crebre's patio idea.
There's a more or less wrap around porch that is amaaaaazing. Checkerboard marble. They have a gym, actually, that would be perfect for dancing but it's not really the same as having all the tables around it.
We can find out what kind of show is going on, but the lack of control really bothers me. Even flower paintings are obnoxious. I wish there was a way we could just cover it all up! i was too nervous to introduce myself to the girl that I've been emailing with even though she was RIGHT THERE! We just walked through like we were browsing the gallery!
I think floral paintings could add to the ambiance... and dancing on the veranda... you could have mint juleps being served by waiters as well as hor dvoures and have cocktail tables out there... sounds sooo appropriately southern :D and just have little mini stations etc... so not a formal sit down reception, more of an art gallery viewing type reception with passed hor dvoures.. omg i have sooo many ideas!!
LOL I do too, cre. It'll be a very KY/ GA wedding, that's for sure! I just need to figure out where to have it. My first choice venue requires you to use their caterer and... it's kinda gross!
that's beautiful. i wanted to look at castle like places, but my fiancé's mom was against it. we signed our paperwork for our venue today though! i'm so excited!
i personally HATE IT when venues require you to use their folks, what a load of bologna!!!
@iggies!!! eee how exciting?!
It's very pretty KM!! I would look at your other venues and you will get a better idea of all the pros and cons and you will be able to make your decision!
No joke, cre! It wouldn't be so bad if they were even... decent.. but their food is mediocre at best and well, I LOVE food! That's a non- negotiable in my book.
WOW! The gallery is absolutely gorgeous!!!! It would be really hard to plan adequately though because they could be putting shows up or down, and may not know far enough in advance. Plus, the lack of a dance floor could really suck! You could just take pictures at the gallery but have your reception somewhere else?
You could also have your reception outside of it, so its like a backdrop. Then you wouldnt have to worry about what exhibit is going on! You could rent tents and a dance floor and do everything right in front of it.
Beautiful! I totally agree with Crebre's idea of a cocktail type reception incorporating the art into your wedding.
@KMSull have you guys checked out rings yet? I know you were trying to get him to go a while ago...good for you for getting him to check out a venue! We are gonna start checking them out when we get back from our trip at the end of the year.
I checked out a modern art gallery (award winning even!) and it was immediately out due to the lack of control over what they would be displaying. Currently there was a naked women photographed as though she were dying on the cross. And a full frontal neekie man...and a video of a woman jumping around half naked (read: large floppy boobies) singing a children's song. There is no way I am having the FI's family fly (some internationally) to be offended by art. Plus I really hated the idea of some wedding photos with a background that commanded more attention than the foreground. This art gallery would not let you cover up anything, at all. Did I mention lady-cross photo was over a story tall?
I had a friend whose reception site when she saw it had floral art and her reception had classic car prints...two different vibes!
My advice- proceed cautiously! You seem very on top of your planning and detail oriented, I would hate for something you couldn’t control to impact your big day in any way! Good luck!
That place is gorgeous! I second the idea of having it on the porch at least as a backup. Also, a tent out front or in the back would be wonderful. I think you should plan around the possibility of there being obnoxious art there. I think that place is too pretty to pass up!
how exciting!! i would totally go for the art gallery. it's unique and sure to be a great memory/time for everyone. i hope it works out!

So some of you may have seen on a random thread that I really loved an art gallery (in a historic house here in Lexington) that doesn't normally do receptions. Well, I've been emailing back and forth with their events coordinator and there's a way around that! It's complicated, but we can do it.
So, we went and looked at it today! It's such a beautiful house, and I love the inside (all white with old wooden floors) but there are some serious drawbacks. For one, we can't really have a dance floor anywhere. Its a bunch of different rooms (since it's an old house) and there's just not a good place to put one. Two, we have to work around whatever art show is showing at the time, meaning that if there are alot of floor installations, we lose alot of space and run the risk of having a really awkward show going on (like right now... demons with blood spewing out of them does not a pretty reception make).
On the way home, we talked about churches and came up with a for sure backup plan in case the church we want is either booked or the person he wants to officiate leaves (her job might be elminated).
Anyway, that's my exciting news! Things are slooooowly coming together! What would you do about the gallery?
