Late last night, my fiance and I arrived home to discover that the window in our bedroom had been shattered. We were robbed, apparently by idiots. They emptied my fiance’s stinky, disgusting gym bag and used that to carry away our belongings. We had a box of change sitting on my fiance’s dresser, and rather than simply taking the box, they apparently emptied that into the bag. They also drank two of our beers (random…), rifled through the empty jewelry case I had in my dresser but completely ignored the full jewelry case on top of the same dresser, and failed to take our XBox, TV, desktop computer, or my fiance’s ridiculously expensive, contains confidential information (he’s a software developer at Apple) work laptop.
What they did take, and why I’m writing this, was my laptop. That computer contained years’ worth of my life, and every single ounce of wedding planning that I’ve done. All of my bookmarks, all of my inspiration photos, all of the pictures I had when I went on my dress-shopping missions, all of the progress I’d made writing our ceremony and my vows, all of the readings I was considering using – gone. And I am a complete and total idiot for not backing up that data. I knew better. And now, it’s too late.
There were two irreplaceable items in our apartment last night – my laptop and my cat. Thankfully, my cat is okay – a little traumatized and super-needy, but okay. Don’t let your laptop be an irreplaceable item.

I’m so sorry to hear this! *hug*

Oh my gosh, RH, I am so sorry! That is so scary and violating. Where do you live in Pgh??

I am so sorry to hear this happened. I am so glad your cat is okay. And that you and your fiance are okay.

That really sucks. Hopefully they continue their dumb habits and the stuff will eventually be returned to you via the police or pawn shops.

Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry. Do you have renters insurance?

reherring, im really sorry to hear about this…hopefully they are able to find your computer and send those idiots to jail!!
I know this probably doesnt help at all right now, but going forward, whenever you find inspiration pictures, email them to yourself…A month after we got engaged our computer crashed and all files were lost, including our guest list (i still think till this day, I still forgot a couple of people from the original list!!!)..So now, I keep my list on google instead of an excel spreadsheet. And whenever I see something I love, I email it to myself and keep it in a Wedding folder within my email…(this also keeps files off your computer, and those files that need to be kept hidden from the FI, like your wedding dress pics!)

OMG I’m SO sorry! That’s absolutely horrible. What a total and complete violation!
Our office was broken into (the guy was running out when I came in that morning, through a different door – scary!) and he took my work laptop, which had most of my wedding stuff on it and I hadn’t backed up either. It’s horrible to rebuild all of that but at least you’re all safe!!! HUGS to you!

OMG, that sucks. Do you still have the beer bottles? Maybe they can do DNA/finger print tests on them and see if they’re in the system? Or maybe I’ve been watching too much Law & Order…
either way, I’m SO sorry this happened to you! Thank god nothing happened to your kitty. I would be devastated if someone broke into our loft, and absolutely heartbroken if anything happened to any of our puppies.

@Rainbow, honestly, they don’t do much when you’ve had a robbery. The cops said that it was more a formality on their part to be there and file paperwork, because they’d probably never catch the guy (even though we had him on camera – but not very clearly) or recover the computers. It really sucks.

Wow you got him on camera and they still can’t do anything? That would be so tragic, I would talk to pawn shops in the area and hopefully your computer will show up!! I’m so sorry this happened to you!!

@JeniRae – We’re in Regent Square, near S Braddock and Overton.
@chelseamorning – Me too. I was in a bit of a frenzy last night, and I think the only thing that could have put me over the edge would have been my cat escaping through the open window.
@ErinMarguerite – Alas, we had moved here fairly recently and hadn’t set up renters insurance yet. But quite honestly, the monetary value of that laptop is worth waaaaay less than the cost of the loss of data.
@IA_Snowflake – Oh, I certainly hope so. We’re going to file the serial number with AppleCare, and that way, if the laptop ever breaks and is brought to an Apple store, it will be confiscated as stolen merchandise.

Oh my gosh! That REALLY stinks. I’m so sorry you’re facing such a major setback. Backing up is so important, and yet, so rarely done.
Best of luck getting back on track.

@Soon2BeMrsCLW3 – At least I made double copies of our address list and didn’t lose all of those. After the pain of emailing/calling every single person on our guest list once, I would have gone crazy had I needed to do that again!
@Laylabelle – While I’m sad it happened to you, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only fool who fails to back up their data. At least I have almost nine months to go through WB archives and re-discover my inspiration ideas 🙂
@rainbow – Yeah, I also want the real world to be like CSI 🙂 The cop did take the beer bottles, but I suspect it was just to make us feel better. I’ve had my car broken in to three times (stereo stolen twice, and I didn’t bother replacing it the third time, so they just broke my back window and didn’t take anything) and the rental property I own had the back door kicked in and was vandalized – the police basically just show up, write down what you tell them, and tell you that it’s unlikely you’ll get your stuff back. But I totally wanted them to dust our apartment for prints.

The same EXACT thing happened to me in November. They took my laptop and all of our small electronics. I still have the urge to kick my own *ss for not backing up my info. I was most upset about the irreplaceable things, like my class ring and the charm necklace my family has given me a charm for every year of my life. It still hurts thinking about that. It feels like a huge violation, not to mention a financial hit. I’m hyper vigilant now, I don’t trust anything, it sucks. I’m really sorry it happened to you. I’d suggest getting renter’s insurance if you haven’t already. We didn’t until the day after we were robbed. It only costs us $18 a month, all the more reason to kick myself. I’m really sorry again.
