I hope they're not a faux-pas! I live in them! If it's warm enough to be comfortable in your region, then why not? Wearing what makes you feel good is all that matters. I'm not one to follow trends or rules.
I do end-up switching to sweater dress and heavier tights when it gets cold.
They're not a faux-pas in the winter, they're actually *very* in right now. I dress more modestly (due to religious reasons) and I wear them year round. But here are some cute examples from some fashion bloggers on how to wear a fall/winter maxi skirt :)

@jjmomma: I'm not generally either, I mostly just wear what i like. But it's not something I have seen so I was wondering!
@mrscheetos: Very cute! thanks for the photos! Great inspirations
I always find the season to season fashion "rules" to be a little weird and hard to remember, especially since the weather is pretty close to the same all year round here.
You can extend the life of your maxi dresses by wearing a blouse, tee or sweater over top so the dress look slike a skirt. Add tights and ankle boots and you have fall and winter fashion.
I wish the maxi thing worked for me - unfortunately, they make me look pregnant. :(
@jaguar: Me too!!! I cannot pull them off. I look like a wide load mac truck with no boobs.
They are cute on everyone else, though! I wish I could wear 'em.
@miss-spunkin: Have tried that too!! It just doesn't work. I'm going to keep on hunting, since they're perfect for summer weather...
I've never even heard of these, so I googled them... I'm not sure what they are? Just long flowy dresses or what? Apparently WI isn't with the fashion because I've never seen anyone wear one, lol. The skirts with winter tops/cardigans/jackets look nice to me, but obviously I'm not very fashionable, haha.
@galloway111: haha you're so funny... and weird that they're not in WI - I'm in your neighbor state and they are EVERYWHERE! :) mostly just in the summer.
They're generally pretty roomy (so yes, flowy), although there are some that are more fitted. They're super comfortable, generally made from jersey knits or something of the like, and are really long. They were especially nice before you get a summer tan ;)
Here are some of my faves:

@mrscheetos: the first one is from flickr, I found it on pinterest, and the second is from free people
I used to wear long skirts all the time! I love them. The only thing is, (of course!) here in Wisconsin they aren't as feasible once the snow and salt and dirty slush comes.
I used to live in them though and wear long johns or tights underneath.
I just bought a really cute on in fall colors over the weekend. It's black with brown and cream flowers. I plan on wearing it with a cardigan!
@Lindsay12.31.2010: sounds adorable!! I have yet to find a fall/winter suitable one... but i'll be on the lookout!
@cbee: yeah, same here. I'm your neighbor ;) so that's probably partially why I never saw it as an all-year round trend. When I lived in NY I saw it moreso.
I still wear mine! I have a navy and white striped one and I usually wear it with a white shirt tucked in and a sweater with a long necklace and bracelets. Super cute!
@galloway111: I don't see them in ND either. I have worn a long skirt a few times, and it just gets wrapped around your legs in the wind and you feel tangled. (Maybe that's why?)
Im always wearing Maxi dresses as well for religious reasons- but you can always find the best maxis depending on the season your in and of course occassion. I love them -- and its perfect for any season!
@miss-spunkin: Huh, interesting. I live on a campus with 40,000 students, so I'm probably in the most fashionable city in WI- and nope, never seen them.
@maryjane: Maybe? I almost never see long skirts unless it's for religious reasons, and I've seen a few long dresses but not this style. So weird!
@julies1949: You are so fast at finding things on here! LOL! I am always impressed!
@julies1949:Aw so sad that the dress is no longer available :(
@julies1949: ahh thank you!
@galloway111: maybe it's cause you're in WI during school year and they are more of a summer trend?
Anyone else know where I can get some nice maxi dresses from? modcloth has great ones I know that, and Ive chcked forever 21/charlotte russe- but does anyone know where I can gt some chic affordable dresses from?
@al1988:I got my maxi skirt from Nordstrom Rack on sale for $20!

How do you ladies feel about this? Maxi dresses/skirts have become a summer wardrobe staple, and I LOVE them. Just curious if you think people can pull them off during off-season as well (fall/winter). They are so cozy but I never see people wear them in the winter. Is it some kind of fashion faux-pas?
