My fiance and I are graduate students. My ring is a 3/4 carat with 2 flanking 1/3 carat diamonds. The center diamond is a lovely family heirloom. We would never be able to replace the ring if I lost it (financially and sentimentally)
Also, it’s a “twister.” It won’t fall past my knuckle, but it is a little loose. This makes me pretty nervous when washing my hands, but its never fallen off.
I am about to go on Spring Break with other graduate sudents in the Bahamas on a Cruise. We’re about to insure the ring (been nagging him about it), but I’m not sure if I should just leave it in my apartment. I’m worried about the beach/ it getting stolen from the room/ it getting stolen off my hand. I mentioned this to my fiance. It makes him really upset when I take it off.
What would you all do? Any opinions? Would you leave it at home? Do you think its safe to keep it in the cabin while we go to the beach?

I would personally probably leave it at home. I wouldnt want anything to happen to it or have to worry about it. If you still want to wear something you can always just get a cheap band for the vacation and just wear it.

I took my ring to Hong Kong and it is a little too big for me, and it was fine. HOWEVER, to be on the safe side I would probably leave it home in your case. My ring is fake so it wouldn’t be hard to replace lol.

@OneDayMrsW: if the ring is loose at all I probably woudl’t take it. Even if you don’t loose it you are just going to be worried about it the whole time. This might be a good call for a stand in ring.
Your ring sounds lovely and though you might not be able to get something exactly like it you should be able to find something at least close from claires or some place like that. Sterling silver and cubic zirconia shoudln’t cost you more than $30 and give you peace of mind

If you really feel uncomfortable wearing it, leave it at home. Better safe than sorry. But if I wore it on vacation, I would definitely feel safer with my ring on my finger with me at all times than in the cabin even if it were in a safe. I’ve worn my ring everywhere I’ve gone though – at the beaches, pool, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking.

First, you need balls put on the inside of your ring so it doesn’t spin and so it feels a little more secure on your finger.
Second, I also think having a stand in for vacations is an excellent idea.
Although I think its a great idea, I also have my ring insured, so I did not get a stand-in and I will be wearing my ring down in Mexico during spring break.

I can’t imagine the devastation I’d feel if I lost my ring. I’m planning on leaving it at home completely when I go on vacation. I got a stand in so the real thing will be safe at home. Have you considered getting a stunt double just so your finger doesn’t feel naked on vacation?

I guess I forgot to add in a few concerns: (1) I wear a size 4 on my left ring finger, it’ll take some searching for a cheap replacement. Most of the standard rings only come down to a 5. (2) My fiance isn’t coming with us. He had a guys-only Vegas trip. He knows why I’m worried, but he also sees it as a “take off my ring so I can party without him” kind of thing. (3) There are a large number of apartment break-ins over school breaks.
Nevertheless, with your validation, I think I am still leaning toward leaving it at here and hiding it somewhere in my apartment haha!

Did you have balls put on the inside of your ring? Would this be better/different than re-sizing?

Here’s a $25 CZ, avail in size 4. (I also wear a 4, so I’ve been searched for it before also). If there are apt break in’s over break, can your FI hold on to it for safe keeping?

@OneDayMrsW: That’s silly. 1) He should trust you and 2) He doesn’t have to wear a ring!
Is there anywhere else you can keep your ring if you decide to not take it with you? Maybe rent a safety deposit box? I know it’s not free, but you’ll feel SO much better knowing that it’s 110% safe.

“he also sees it as a “take off my ring so I can party without him” kind of thing.”
ugh, this is the third time I’ve tried to edit this, but in short: that’s ridiculous.

After we got married I stopped wearing my E ring as I was nervous about losing it. Until the day we were out shopping and the house got broken into! Miracle of miracles, the ring wasn’t taken even though they had SEEN it. So now, I don’t want to let it out of my sight as I’d rather lose it while enjoying it than have it stolen by some jerk who doesn’t appreciate it. And insurance doesn’t cover it completely (especially something sentimental like yours).
I have taken my ring on some holidays and left it at home on others. It depends on what the holiday is. Week road tripping around NZ? I took it. Five weeks motorcycling around Europe? I left it at home, in a VERY safe place. A cruise in the Bahamas I would probably leave it at home – I’d be nervous about losing it while swimming especially and wouldn’t trust that the room on the cruise was secure enough. If you’d like to have a ring on, I’d go with PP’s suggestions for a cheap replacement of some kind.
