It depends, but right now in Maine (where my family is) they still have snow on the ground and a lot of it. It’s 38 degrees and raining today in my hometown and they’re expecting more snow this weekend. Even in areas where the snow will have melted, it will likely still be relatively cold and wet and possibly rainy (they call it Mud Season for a reason). It’s very hard to plan for New England weather. June is usually lovely, but one June it rained or misted every single day in Boston. You just have to take what you’re dealt. That said, if I had to choose, I’d prefer summer or fall in New England. It also sort of depends on what you’re planning to do. Obviously, it’s easier to deal with bad weather if you’re just checking out a city than if you’re planning on hiking or kayaking.

I’m from southern New Hampshire. April is still pretty cold. Usually the last snowstorm of the year is around St. Pats and the snow doesn’t melt fully until the beginning of April, leaving it muddy and chilly. The days will get to around 50 depending on how far North you go. It probably won’t be rainy until May though.

I guess I feel like the glory of New England is the outdoors, and this is not the best time to be outdoors in New England. Of course, there are always these amazing spring days where you can’t bear to be inside, but those are closer to the end of May. I would reschedule for July, September, or October. We vacation in North Conway, NH in late July every year and it is always amazing for outdoor activities and swimming.

Last April 3rd Massachusetts got as much as 9 inches of snow in some parts. April 1st 1997 we got about two feet after having a high of 63 degrees and sunny just two days before. Needless to say early April is a crap shoot.

I’m in northern Vermont and we are still snow covered and chilly (in the 30s here today).  There have been many April’s under snow and plenty more where I’ve been in shorts and tank tops.  Nothing is a guarantee here, especially in the spring! wink
