I’m finishing my undergrad in this upcoming school year–the wedding is in October, which is around the same time that I’ll be working on grad school applications. I will be changing my name, and wonder what is the best way to communicate this to the professors in my program? Would it be weird to send them individual announcements to the school, or is that even necessary? I don’t want there to be any issues with people not knowing who I am and I won’t come into contact with all of the professors that will be determining whether or not I will get in the program.

Do you mean your undergrad professors? Are you having them as references? If so, when you ask them to be references, let them know you are getting married and what your new name will be. I don’t think the ones at the grad school will matter as much since they only know you by your married name.

There are only two that I plan on asking for references. I’m actually only applying to two programs–one is my current school, and the professors there teach undergrad and grad classes–those are the ones that I am more concerned about. I haven’t decided if I want to stay local or not.
