As well we were thinking of adding something about where people could send gifts or is that just plain old rude?

That would be just plain old rude. If you have a return address on the envelope, those who would like to send a gift, will know where to send i.

I think you need to seperate the announcement from the invitation.  Even if they are two pieces in one envelope.  If you want to invite the US folks then invite them. 

And definitely no mention of gifts.  If you want US gifts mailed to a US address use a seperate return label on those invites.  It is very impolite to mention gifts on the invite.
