I've worn black to several weddings. It's such a classic color and an event staple for me. Go for it!
I agree with @ccranetobe, black is classic. You are a guest and I think as long as you don't wear white you are fine. Maybe lighten it up with some bright/funky jewelry if you are afraid people will talk.

I have read a couple of posts in regards to wearing white dresses to a wedding, but I was curious if there was a rule in regards to wearing a black dress to a wedding? I have to attend a wedding on Saturday and I purchased a black dress on sale ($10!!) and I love it. I wanted to wear it to the wedding. I do not get along with the bride very well, so I wanted to blend as much as possible by not wearing very bright colors or anything even remotely close to white. What are your thoughts?
