We just decorated our cake with flowers. We didn't have a topper. It's really up to you. You can get initials, a bride & groom doll, birdies-- whatever you want. We decided to just get our florist to decorate the cake with flowers because it didn't matter to us if there was a topper or not-- I just wanted the cake to look pretty and our florist did that. :)
Do something as creative as you can, and make it something that is personal to you. I love the initial look but my fiance turned me off to it by suggesting a topper that meant something to us. His family is from Holland so we decided to use a custom cake topper that is a Dutch boy and girl kissing. It's adorable!
If you plan to have a topper, I think that it is just as important as any other part of your wedding day. Do what you love!
There are so many cute cake toppers! We're just doing flowers, but I've seen so many cute birdies and other things that you can put on top of your cake. Try looking for "cake toppers" at Etsy.

We just put flowers on the cake and didn't bother with a cake topper.

My FI and I decided to have just the initial of his last name for our topper (I will change my name to his) so it could be something to pass on to our children (if we have boy(s)). They could use it for their wedding and/or later on we could re-use it on top of an anniversary cake.
