I hoped to hire a DOC since I am planning from afar, but I have read that coordinators also will negotiate with your vendors/venue in the early planning stages. Has anyone had experience with this? I know you can save a bit by negotiating, but I am terrible at it.

Yes that is true but not all planners offer "negotiating with vendors". Although it is something that we like to offer to ensure that the bride & groom (our clients) gets more than what they bargained for; being budget friendly and cautious, and we also like to make sure that they are not being taken advantage of by other vendors who doesn’t have the bride/groom’s best interest at heart. So yes, if you need someone to negotiate pricing, services, and etc, the planner you choose should be able to do this for you. Hope this helps! Congratulations on your engagement!

I definitely think that any planner worth their grain will work to ensure the couple has the best possible service for the best price. Usually planners work with specific vendors who may give a discount for the referral. I am a planner in Baton Rouge and I know that several of the vendors that I work with will either give a discount or tweak the package to fit within the couple’s parameters.

My planner negotiated with all of my vendors. I didn’t even have to see it in most cases, it was great!
