I am having trouble deciding bewteen picking a reguar wedding cake or doing cupcakes. The resort I am getting married at charges a cutting fee of $3.50 for person, so I was thinking cupcakes would cut that expense out, but at the same time I fear I might regret not having a traditional cake years from now. Did anyone have a wedding cupcake cake and did you regret it?
Here is a design I fell in Love with for both designs:
Regular Cake:

Or Whimsical Cupcakes:

i am making the cupcakes for our wedding, and the venue normally charges $3.50 cake cutting fee, but with cupcakes, it is only $2. :( Super frustrating, but whatever.
I had cupcakes and one small tier. I did not regret it and my guests loved it. I arranged them really cute on a stand.
I think the cupcakes are adorable, but I am biased since I am doing cupcakes too. I don't think you will regret it, especially since the idea you have has a top cake that you can do the traditional cake cutting on anyway.
I'm not a cake person, I didn't want to pay a cake cutting fee, and everyone will take home a cupcake before they take home slices of wedding cake. It was perfect. Since I purchased close to 60 cupcakes for less than 40 guests, ppl took extras home and we had lots of dessert for several days after. Also I had 3 flavors available to ppl could try all 3 if they wanted.
Go w/ Cupcakes:)
We did cupcakes and no cake to cut. I don't regret it at all! We did a bunch of different flavored mini cupcakes so you could have more than one. Yummy!
@MissCharley85: What about having cupcakes and then having one of those fake foam cakes decorated to look like the real thing. You could even have a real layer in there for you and your FI to cut and take home for yourselves. My FI and I are doing cupcakes and instead of a foam cake we will have a little two layer cake that we can cut and take home.
We are doing half and half. Our baker has a stand so that the top tiers can be cake and the bottom can be cupcakes.....
I like both examples, because even the cupcake one has a cake on the top layer which looks nice. :) Either way you can't go wrong.
i don't really like that particular cake. But i prefer cake for weddings in general. Cupcakes just remind me too much of kids B-day parties and I want to avoid that at weddings.
I am all about cupcakes, but my FH wants a traditional cake still. To compromise, I think we'll be going with the option that has a small cake on top of the cupcakes, like pictured above - everyone wins!
i love the whole cupcke thing! im doing it! love it think it looks cute as!
I love the cupcakes over a traditional cake. I feel like I never see anyone eating cake. Plus, people are usually surprised to see it.
I think cupcakes definitely! I am going to do cupcakes as well; they will be in small mason jars as wedding favors, as well as have a stand and everything with them just decorated and ready to eat. Yum!
We did cupcakes (our venue still charged us $3 per person - ridiculous!) because it was just more our style. I loved how it turned out! We did not do a "cutting," but we still fed eachother a cupcake and it made great pictures!
Some venues still charge the cake cutting fee even if you have cupcakes, so make sure you find out about that, if that is a factor!
I prefer a wedding cake at a wedding...I agree with a pp that cupcakes remind me of birthday parties. I love your cake inspiration...beautiful!
We did both: cupcakes and a cutting cake. It was a good compromise for us because I wanted a regular, tiered cake but my husband wanted cupcakes.

I've heard that getting venues to get rid of the cake-cutting fee is one of the easiest to get them to ... uh, cut. Try it!
We're doing a cupcake tree, and I'm super excited about it! Ours will look like the one below.

Ok, I seriously resized that and it still came out HUGE...sorry about that! :-)
We did cupcakes with a 6 inch cake to cut. Worked out wonderfully, for the kids and the adults that came to the wedding. I agree with others and make sure your venue doesn't get sneaky and charge a fee for cupcakes.
I'm having both! My traditional "cake" will be a dummy cake (styrofoam decorated in fondant). There will be one real slice of cake wedged in the back, so we can do the cake cutting, but the rest of it will just be for show. The dessert table will be filled with cupcakes and other yummy desserts for the guests.
If you had cupcakes, did they get dry before eating them? I'm worried about setting them up in the afternoon and having them sit until dinner which will be between 5 and 7 in the evening.
@ashers033: Ours didn't get dry whatsoever. We also had black bottom cheesecake cupcakes, so the cheesecake may have made them more moist than the average cupcake.
I have to admit that I like both. But for a wedding I decide a cake.
Though I hope thats enough. After I told ne of my future guests about the cake she asked me whats for dessert. I said the cake is the dessert. I figured thats enough. I hope.
Is it customary to have a cake/cupckaes and a dessert? Hmmm
My venue is only 1.00 for cake cutting, either way we wanted a traditional cake.
We did cupcakes with a topper cake, and everyone loved them! And no cake cutting fee!

@ashers033: We had the same situation...set them up in the afternoon, and they were still moist and delicious at 8pm when everyone dug into them. We had a ton leftover and didn't pack them up til the morning after, and they were still moist. So I don't think you have anything to worrry about.
We did wedding cupcakes. My only regret is that after we cut our ceremonial extra-large cupcake, and fed each other a bite, we left to chat with friends and later discovered that our cupcake was GONE. Someone ate it? or the staff threw it out? No one knows, but we had a handful of leftover cupcakes so I'll guess the staff threw it out when they started cleaning up. We got one bite each of our awesome huge cupcake :(

I really like whimsical cupcakes for cetain weddings, it really goes with the more casual or vintage type themes that are less formal.
As my wedding is very formal and I just don't get the cupcake vibe so we opted for a fondant cake instead.
We had cupcakes and don't regret it one bit. They were beautiful and super yummy! We had a small "cutting cake" that topped it off so we still got to do that and have the look of a regular cake.

I'm doing a traditional cake. I like the look of the traditional cake and cupcakes feel a little less formal to me. Also, I think cupcakes can be a little messy. I'm not at all knocking ladies who choose cupcakes, it's just not my thing.
Cupcakes are the way to go! Less expense! Less hastle! Equally beautiful and delicious!
We did cupcakes and everyone loved them! We had 3 different flavors (vanilla, coconut and lemon) and made a cute sign that explained that you could have the flavor you wanted by the number of yellow rosettes on them. One rosette was vanilla, two was coconut and three was lemon. Everyone thought it was super cute and I don't regret not having a cake.
We never had a formal "cupcake" cutting, or whatever you call it when you have cupcakes. Our guests just ate them throughout the night. DH and I took one at the VERY end of the night and fed it to each other and then ended up smashing it in each other's faces. It made for a fun photo op.

Wow, $3.50 for cake cutting per person, that is terrible!
Oh but that cake is beautiful! Im having a cake, but Im getting married at my parents farm so I dont have to pay cakage, just need to buy a big pile of serviettes and my mum will cut it up.
I love cupcakes but i feel like my wedding is too formal for them. However, if we had a 3.50 a person cake cutting fee i would just have cupcakes!
i'm making cupcakes! and we dont have a cake cutting fee. i just think they are easier, cuter and funner. i will also do a round cake. 9" as our main wedding cake. with cupcakes to serve.
I would regret having cupcakes myself, and I know that, which is why--despite my love of cupcakes--I'm getting a cake. I thinka compromise though, is to get a small cake to cut and display and to serve cupcakes, but something bothers me (and I don't know why) about the tables of cucpcakes and the towers of cupcakes.
I'm doing a mix of cupcakes and mini cupcakes. We're going to have a small cake on the top to cut. I don't expect everyone to take a regular cupcake and I thought our minis would be nice to go with the sweets table.
I'm so excited to see how it turns out. I had to have my mom and MOH do the taste testing because I'm overseas. They loved it!
