Just wondering how many people are doing their own make up or having it done professionally? I always thought I'd have it done but took advantage of a free "touch up" at Macy's yesterday -- it looked like a joke! Thinking about doing it myself now..
I'm doing it myself and maybe having my mom help a bit. I figure, I've been doing my own makeup successfully my whole life; I can do it for this day too. Save some money for my honeymoon.
Everyone seems surprised when I say that I wanna do my own makeup. The thing is, I HATE HATE HATE how I look when my makeup is done professionally. They seem to think that if you have freckles, you want them covered up. I hate that!
im doing myself makeup no budget to pay somebody
First of all, the poll is confusing, what's YES and what's NO? lol
Ok, so anyway, I was thinking of DIY my makeup since I know what I like.. but then my FH said i should have it done by a friend or someone else (hmmm... is he hinting about something....???) But other people have said the same thing. My hairdresser is doing my hair for the wedding & she said she does makeup too, so i was going to ask her how much she charges and maybe go that way. It might be nice to have someone else do it.. Idk, we'll see :-)
I'm having someone do my makeup for me and my bridesmaids and the moms. She will be coming to our hotel room and will stay throughout the ceremony and part of the reception to do touchups for pics and things.
I feel like I know how to do my makeup well but for my wedding day, I want a pro to do it and plus, I wouldn't mind the pampering ;) Also, I want to look into airbrush and I can't do that by myself and won't even attempt ha. I will, however, make sure at the trial that everything is to my liking because if not, she won't be booked for the wedding.
I thought about getting it professionally done, but ended up being too lazy and too cheap to even start researching make-up trials.
My bridesmaids have been doing my make up forever, so I went with them and was very happy with the results.
still not sure - i never like the results wheni go to makeup counters etc, so i might do it myself but get tips from professionals?
dunno though...
For you DIYers, you should be aware that wedding makeup, while not stage makeup is different than regular makeup. It has to have staying power and hold up to heat and photography. Professionals usually lay it on a little heavier and use more expensive higher quality products. Just a heads up.
i am def having someone else do my hair and makeup! i feel like i do an okay job of this most of the time, but most of the time, i am not spending thousands of dollars to have someone take pictures of me! for me, not getting a pro to do this would be like buying a brand new car, but not changing the oil...it is one investment that enhances another. :-) plus, i want some crazy, kim kardashian-on-the-runway hair!
like @eileenmarie said, the main reason I'm getting my makeup professionally done is because when I do my own, it looks good for the first two hours, but then fades. I need it to last at least 10 hours on the day of!
I did my own makeup and if I do say so myself, I was really happy with how it turned out! I did a lot of research beforehand and took time to plan and practice a few times. I don't regret doing it myself at all. Even the next morning it was still almost perfect because I didn't wash my face before I went to bed!
However, I have a steady hand and am pretty good at doing my makeup. Not professionally good, but I can get it done. I also did my own hair, and I kind of regret that. I wish I had sprung for a professional but I was feeling totally broke.
@Deebstation: The poll is yes, you are doing your own makeup or no, you are not.
getting mine done. i wanna look a lil more than the everyday makeup that i know how to put on. and not in the skanky going out dark raccoon eye look that i change it up to when i go out at night with the girls LOL. those are the only two styles i know how to do. plus i dont know how to put on fake eyelashes...
I would do it ONLY if I were very good at it. As a matter of fact I am very good at it (every time there's a party I have my gfs standing in line waiting for me to put makeup on them) but I'm too afraid my hands will be shaking that day!
I'm having someone come to me to do my hair and makeup. I'm sure I could do it myself but I really want the day to be as relaxing as possible.
I think there's a difference between he quality you will experience between a quick touch up at a mall make-up counter and a professional make-up artist. I plan to have my make-up done at a local salon and will be having a consultation beforehand to make sure it's what I want.
With that said, it's likely you could do a great job! I never feel very comfortable with the make-up that I do for special occasions and I want to make sure I look good both in person and for the pictures, so this is one area where I feel more comforable paying someone else to do something for me.
I don't own any make up! And I haven't since high school... I wouldn't even know where to begin if I were to try and do it myself. Fortunately for our limited budget, I found a friendor who can do hair and makeup for a very reasonable rate. :)
I am definitely doing my own makeup!! Most (not all, please don't be offended ladies) of the professionally done makeup I have seen for weddings looks so unnatural - as in you see a before picture of someone right before they walk in to have their makeup done, and they look like a completely different person afterwards. I know that I want to look like the same person my fiance proposed to and not some heavily made up person whose facial features and coloring don't even resemble his girlfriend. Unfortunately, I see too many girls with TONS of makeup on their wedding day and I just don't want to be one of them! I will say that Miss Octopus' makeup artist did an excellent job with keeping her gorgeous and not too overdone (see her recent post for pics). Makeup is one of the few things I feel pretty confident with and since I plan to keep it really simple and natural, I feel like I could save myself a lot of time and money by just taking really good care of my skin, investing in some nice makeup and doing it myself.
I feel confident in my abilities to do my own make-up.....luckily I have great skin and a natural tan :o) so I'm not worried about covering up acne or scarring and not worried about looking too washed out (these are the main reasons people have argued for hiring a professional). I have a steady hand and am not nervous AT ALL about the big day....excited? yes....nervous/anxious? no....
I have made an appointment this week at the MAC counter to get a tutorial and get some photograph-friendly make-up, then I plan to purchase some good new brushes at the beaty supply store and practice a few times over the next few weeks....seeing as how I have graduation next week and a wedding shower the week after that, I'm sure I can figure out how I want it exactly and how well it will photograph.
I always thought I would pay for someone to do it, but every time I've had someone else do my makeup, they do waaaaaay too much contour on the eye (so I look like an alien,) and my skins looks weirdly chalky.
If I can find a makeup artist and do a trial, and they can find a way to make it last all day, it might be worth the money. I just want defined eyes, pink cheeks and subtle yet noticeable lips. And I don't want to look to monochromatic.
I guess I'll do some trials and then decide.
I figure with lip/cheek tint, waterproof eyeliner and mascara, and gel eyeliner, it could last all day.
I'm doing it myself, but I am getting some advice on quality products to buy beforehand. I just want to look like my best self, and so I think I can do that pretty easily.
I think I'm going to have someone else do it just for the longevity and the peace of mind it will give me on the day-of...although if I go for a trial and hate it I may cancel :)
Since my wedding is in my small hometown and is an hour away from any professionals I will be doing my own, but I know what I like so I've got no problem with it and I'll save some $$$.
I'm really torn on this. I am NOT very good at doiing my own makeup I don't think, and I really don't wear that much of it. But, I have really really challenging skin and the few times I've gotten my makeup done professionally (at a salon, not at the mall), even after I explain to them what they need to do to work with me they don't believe me and it ends up looking terrible! Plus, I always feel kind of ho-ish. I'm just not used to seeing myself with suuuuuuper done eyes and lipstick, and they always have such a heavy hand.
So this makes me think if I was going the professional route I'd need at least one trial, maybe 2 to make sure they actually GOT waht I wanted, and that just all sounds like a lot of money. So I dunno.
I'm considering doing my skin makeup myself (foundation, blush, bronzer) and then having my BM do my eyes and lips. She's not professional good, but she's a lot better than I am.
I am definitely doing my own. I might buy some nicer brushes and some longer lasting foundation but I've basically got everything else I would ever need!
There's no one in the area I'm getting married that I would trust with my make-up, that I know of. Since it's semi-destination, I don't have the luxury of multiple trials. I'd rather do it myself than look completely generic.
thanks for the feedback, ladies! good to know i won't be a total outcast if i do my own!
I am getting my make-up done but I think that people can do their own and it turns out very well...just keep in mind to use make-up that will photograph well :)
I would say if you are confident in how to do your make up but be prepared get the right products your everyday stuff will not cut it. everyday makeup will start to fade and melt off if you are in the heat and especially with the eye makeup. I would suggest a run through with a professional and talk about things like your freckles. most professionals work with the features you like and mask the others. When you go to buy the quality makeup you may also realize it may be cheaper. I wear smashbox and most of runs around 20$-30$ per item.
My Godmother's Daughter is coming in to do everyone's makeup. She is amazing and I am just going to give her some $$$ for being sooo sweet to come in and do everyone's makeup!
I'm having mine professionally done because I'm a total make-up klutz. Most days I just wear tinted moisturizer and lip gloss. On my wedding day, I need something with a little more staying power (getting married outdoors in FL).
My sister is going to do mine. She's really good at doing make-up. She used to do mine for prom and homecoming and stuff like that.
WOW thanks for the feedback girls! I do plan on going with my friend who has even more freckles than me to get some advice on a)what to buy and b)how do go about doing my own make up. One of my best friends who will be at the wedding also has freckles too and would help me. I think between my friends and me, we can do it! But I will look into buying some quality foundation, etc.
I was thinking about having it done too, but I'm too afraid someone will completely mess it up. At least if I learn how to do it well, I know what I want and I can do what I want.
Great question! I am on a tight budget (read: 0) for hair and makeup. But, I know my limitations. I do fine with my makeup for day-to-day stuff. But for a wedding? I can't. I know this. I'm very fair, and camera flashes just penetrate my skin and my regular makeup. If I do my own makeup, I will be pink and shiny in the pictures. If I'm lucky. If I'm unlucky, I'll be purple. Plus, I can't do my own hair. Ever. So, I'm combing Craigslist. We'll see what happens!
One of my BFs is a beauty therapist, and has offered to do all the make up for my wedding. Only prob is, I don't really like how she does her own! So I'm gonna have to do a trial with some dutch courage (wine) in to be able to open my gob if I'm not happy with it! Any ideas how I could arrange someone else to do it, if necessary, without offending my friend?
Also, I know I sound like a cow saying this, but I really don't like how 2 of my bms do their own make up (talking streaks and orangeness here) so I reckon I want a professional to do theirs anyway, so it would be a bit weird to have someone do theirs but not mine!
@aunt pol I didn't even THINK about how my BM do their make up! Funny! But I will say, two of them hardly ever even wear make up, so putting too much on won't be a problem. And the other is my lil sister and I've no prblm to tell her to fix her make up!
I'm confident enough to do my own make up, but my hair I'm not so sure.
Oh I am not doing my hair! But the question was for the make up not the hair! ;)
