Figure out what shots you want and then work out a timeline with your photographer so that they are there to cover it.

see, the problem with timelines is you can’t always stick with them. it’s impossible to keep alot of people together…as you will be busy with other things going on. just be careful when booking the photographer as they’ve got the most expierience with weddings, and although $2500 may seem like alot…the pictures you want and might not be able to get are worth far more than that. just a thought. it seems like a good price to me, as we are paying $3200 for 8 hours, 2 shooters, a cd with the edited images, and they’ll be shooting our rehearsal dinner as well. shop around, you might be able to find a better deal, and even check out photography majors…they might give you the best deal and just want to be able to use your photos for their portfolio.

If that’s all you can afford, max out the time you get for that money, or possibly drop the second shooter to free up more money in the budget to extend the timeline. We didn’t have one, and our coverage was still amazing. You WILL need extra time to get those group shots.

@crayfish: exactly.

Tell the photog. you can only afford to pay him $1500 and ask what he can offer you for that price.  What are you willing to compromise on?  Maybe you can drop the second shooter for the reception or another part of the day?

As others have stated you shouldnt need a second shooter with only 50 guests.  Perhaps trade that for more time.

Can you ask about doing 5 hours? That would give you the extra time to guarantee you get what shots you want.
