Wedding Dress 2nd Thoughts?

posted 3 months ago in Beehive

I was newly engaged and had been to only one gown appointment when I went to the Kleinfeld's sample sale last Wednesday. The whole event was pretty stressful - waited in line for 2 hours before being set loose to scavenger "the" dress.  I tried on my first dress and felt like a million dollars.  It was voluptuous, dramatic, couture, and half the original price.  It was also completely different from the type of dress I intended on getting.  After the high wore off, I returned home and started having major second thoughts.  It's a beautiful dress, but fit more for a grand affair, not my small, outdoor event.  And even though I got a great deal, I still spent more than I was expecting too, not to mention the cleaning and alternation fees I still have to front. So I'm not sure what to do?  It's a sample dress so I need to get it altered anyway, do I scale the dress down?  Do I try to sell it and buy the more appropriate dress?  There are so many styles to choose from!

Anyone else purchased a wedding dress on an impulse?  Or had second thoughts on wedding dresses at all?  Anyone tried to do major structural alterations to a dress?  Anyone tried to sell their dress?

I bought my first dress probably sooner than I should have.  I thought I liked it but as time went on, the more I tried it on, the less I liked it.  So, one day I decided I was going to look again....found "the" dress, tried it on and it was perfect...I am so happy I didn't settle for a dress I didn't love.

I was able to sell dress number one on Weddingbee!

I say try to sell it if you don't love it and start over.

maybe try to sell it but (if you have time) don't seriously start to shop for a new one yet or at least don't buy one until you see if you can afford 2

You're right, your dress does not seem appropriate for a small outdoor ceremony. I would look for another dress, but to keep costs down, see if you can get one used from another bride, on places like craigslist and weddingbee classifieds. Mark the funds you would have used toward cleaning and alternations toward purchasing and altering another pre-loved dress for yourself.

I would not try to substantially alter this dress---too dangerous. Selling it might take a little work, since in these days of casual outdoor ceremonies you're going to be catering to the bride who is having the lavish, formal affair. Don't give up though! Good luck.

The dress is gorgeous, especially the color.  Sometimes our instincts/impulses are not a bad thing.  If I were you I'd wait a couple weeks before you do anything, and really think it through (but without obsessing).  If you really love the dress, who cares if its a small outdoor ceremony.  Anything goes now adays.  You could also wear it for the ceremony, then get a second dress for the reception thats a little more low key.   That is a beautiful dress and something must have attracted you to it!   Try to focus on what attracted you to it.  did you try on others at the sample or was this the only one?

The dress was one of the first wedding purchases for us.  I did have second thoughts, but am actually so happy I stuck with my dress. It's probably pretty common with those who buy dresses early.

Major alterations seem more than a little risky on your dress.  If you have second thoughts on your dress, try putting the itaway for a bit and trying it on again fresh.  If you still question your decision, start looking around and see if another dress calls out to you.  Should you find another dress, then sell this one (ebay, weddingbee, craigslist).

yeah it doesn't fit the "feel" of a small outdoor wedding...but if you love it then I say "who cares". Fashion police won't stop you.  BUT if you aren't totally into it then just try selling it and see what happens...you might be able to recoup most of the cost.

I bought my dress relatively early too.  Although I still love it, I do regret spending so much money on it (it was 3x more than I was looking to spend).  I'm sure I could have found something else I loved for much less.

I agree with BaghdadBride -if you love it, wear it! No one is going to look at you and think "That dress is too nice"  - most likely they will think "She looks stunning!!"  I think it is an awesome dress and if you love it, consider keeping it !!  But if you don't love, I agree drastic alterations are not the way to go....

FYI, I had massive second thoughts on my dress but I wore it and loved it - there was a reason I bought it and I couldn't have been happier!
