I suggest reading some of Miss Hot Cocoa's posts! She's wedding planning from HK and have a lot great leads on vendors!
I'm not sure about what's available in Hong Kong but I can sympathize with planning from abroad--my fiance and I both taught English in China for two years and he proposed while we were there! We did a bit of planning from afar before I got a new job and moved back. I'd agree on the dresses--my Chinese coworkers who got married all had giant puffy snowbeast concoctions!
I did manage to pick up some stuff for decorations and centerpieces at a Japanese discount store that one of the bees posted about - maybe Mrs. Ant?
Out of curiosity, where in China are you teaching (I know that's like saying 'Where in the US do you live!)?
I loved Yangshuo!
I lived in Guilin for a while and absolutely loved it. Say hello to China for me! Best of luck with your overseas wedding planning. :)
Yangshuo is beautiful--we took our first vacation there!
We taught in Jinzhou, Liaoning province in the frigid northeast. My current job allows me to travel back and forth and I usually visit Changsha and Hong Kong, among other places.
I was in Yangshuo and Guilin last December on a family vacation!! :) Yangshuo's beautiful! And yes, I agree that the dresses in HK will probably look trendier than those in China :) Unfortunately, I cant help re places to go for boutiques.

Since I'm teaching English abroad in China the year before my summer 2009 wedding, I've had to plan a lot of this overseas which, unsurprisingly, is a pain the butt even though I have wonderful BM's who are helping out a lot back home.
However, one thing they can't do is try on dresses for me and I can't wait till getting back to pick a dress since it'd be too late. So, I'll have to get one in China. However, ones that I've seen in the city I'm teaching look very Cinderella-ey--pretty typical of a lot of Western style wedding dresses in China so I hear. I'm thinking of heading out to HK soon to check that out. Has anyone gotten their white wedding dress shopping done in HK? If so, do you have any advice on where to go, costs, etc? Also, will staying there for 1 week be enough? I can always swing by later to pick it up, but if possible, I'd like to take just 1 week off work to d o this!
Also, I think I might try to get wedding invitations finished while I'm there also. Do you have any suggestions on HK vendors?
Thanks!
