@juliamarie32:  can I ask why you would choose functional buttons over decorative ones?

Ask them for a zipper closure with buttons and elastic loops to close over the zipper.  IMO, you need the zipper to secure the dress, but the elastic loops would allow the buttons to cover the zipper.

@juliamarie32:  The poster above has the best advice. I had a zipper but I also had decorative buttons with the elastic loop closure. The buttons looked beautiful and since they had the loops they laid flat and completely covered the zipper. Make sure to have a crochet hook on hand when you get back to your hotel room so you new husband can get you out of your dress 😉

It depends on how large your dress is. I had a large ball gown and thank goodness I had a zipper with faux buttons over top because let me tell you, going to the bathroom was a nightmare!! I learned that the BEST way to do this was to unzip out of the dress, step out, go, step back in, zip, done! If I had a corset or real buttons, forget it, not peeing alll night!

Not to be too graphic, but what you don’t think about, is sure, you can get your maids to hold it over your head and you can sit down but you can’t really finish off the job because your hands are trapped!! Sorry if TMI, haha

Re-opening this thread — has anyone done this, and about how much did it cost?
