@mjones: I just got a dress from WeddingDressMix.com and it is beautiful.  However, I did not get it made-to-measure and that was a huge mistake.  A size 14 in The United States is about a size 10 in China!  It only cost me $130 with shipping, though.  I’ve learned a lot about shopping for wedding dresses and evening gowns online.  If you Google Discount Wedding Dresses and start scrolling through the various sites you’ll see a lot of the same photos at different sites.  At first I thought it was one company behind it all but now I think it’s a lot of different factories in China who simply duplicate the dresses in the photos – and many of the photos are shared!

I paid through PayPal and, at first, I thought there was a problem because I heard back from PP but go no word from WDM, so I emailed them.  It was nearly a month before they responded!  When I got my dress it was neatly folded into a small plastic Express Mail bag so I was quite surprised when I pulled it out and put it up to me.  Beautiful.  True to my prior experience with them, I emailed and asked how I can place a second order, made-to-measure this time… Mine happens to be a style I haven’t seen on any of the other sites so it’s a good thing I’m in no hurry!

In short, WDM makes a great dress, as I’m sure all those Chinese-based factories do, but you’d better not be in a hurry if you need to communicate with them!  Really though, a beautiful dress.

@mjones:

Hello! Did you end up purchasing a dress from mixweddingdress.com? I saw a dress that I love but I’m having the same problem as you were having — no reviews!

Please let me know if you ordered a dress from them and what your experience was like.

Thanks!!

My experience was exactly what I wrote.  I didn’t buy it to wear as a wedding dress so when it arrived and was too small (from China, where a 12 fits like a 10!)I wrote and asked how I could custom order a second dress.  I never heard back :(.  I can’t fit into it (yet) but it is really stunning.

if you can find the same dress from another online retailer who IS more responsive I’d recommend it because you really should find a dressmaker who will make the dress to your measurements. The WeddingDressMix website (They also go by a few other names) states that they can custom size their dresses but that option is not available on their online form and I can’t get them to tell me how I can do that.  Oh well.  If you can’t find your dream dress anywhere else (see below) make sure you order the dress a size or two larger.  You can always alter it smaller but the reverse isn’t likely.

Nearly all the online wedding dress retailers are in China and nearly all the dresses are knock-offs of much more expensive gowns by famous bridal designers. My dress is a poly-taffeta and I’ve yet to see it anywhere else so it’s probably a discontinued design.  However, I was eyeing a stunning gown also made of poly-taffeta at another online retailer.  I was checking out several famous label (think $6,000 range) designer bridal websites and I stumbled upon the original – made of SILK (not poly) taffeta.  I’m sure the original designers would LOVE to shut down all the Chinese factories ripping off their designs (especially since they’re so bold they actually use the original designer photos, stolen off the designer’s websites!) but can’t find a legal way to put a stop to it.  It isn’t fair to the designers but if you don’t have 6K to blow on a dress that only costs 6K because it’s white and a “wedding dress” I think they’re kind of asking for it ;).  Besides, you’ll only wear the dress once and it’s likely you’ll be the only one knowing you’re wearing a knock-off up at the alter.  If it’s gorgeous, it cost you $140, and the original is 6K… you’re not going to care!

Many of the online retailers can make adjustments to a design or even copy a design from a bridal magazine photo.  They can change a zip-up back to lace up, shorten the train, add straps, or even make the dress in lots of colors not traditionally bridal (ice blue, chocolate brown).  So the online retailers are a nice option any time you really want something specific.  Anyway, if you Google “discount wedding gowns” or something similar you’ll find a lot of options.  Milanoo.com is a good one.  Here’s a few more:

-LightInTheBox.com

-DHGate.com

-JJsHouse.com

-Micwell.com

At any rate, as long as you have plenty of time and patience you have a good chance of getting something really lovely from WeddingDressMix.com but communicating with them is a truly annoying experience.  You might find the exact same photo of the dress you love at Milanoo.com and they are MUCH more responsive.  They had an ivory silk sheath with a little bling that I liked.  When I contacted them and said I’d love it as a soft sage green evening dress with no train and a bit more bling” they said “We can do it.”  Now THAT’S service!  Send THEM a link to a photo of the dress you love and if it isn’ already in their repertoire I bet they can make it for you.  Good luck.
