I know sizes for bridal dresses vary by designer, so this poll isn’t very scientific haha. But I was wondering how many differences in size does your wedding dress size vary from your normal street size. You don’t have to comment and give your specific sizes or anything, since I know that’s a little personal. I’m just curious to see the difference :)

I voted based off dresses that had sample sizes and how they fit me.

My dress doesn't come in sizes so I don't know for it. The salon just took my measurements and the dress is made to custom measure rather than ordering in a size and then altering.

The dresses I tried on ranged from my street size in the dress fitting me perfectly, a few in my street size were too big, many in my street size were a size or 2 too small.

I put plus one, but honestly I don't know what my true street size is some days. I tend to wear size 6 clothes and my dress was ordered in a size 8, but that was to accomidate my rib cage and the rest will prob have to be taken back down a size. The sample I tried on was a size 6. I'm hoping it was stretched out though and that the 8 will fit perfectly. I should be getting it in any day now, so we will see!

I tend to be a street size 10 on top, 12 on the bottom, but I ordered my wedding dress in a 16 and it needed very little alterations.

However, I did try on one size 28 that I couldn't even get on it was so tiny.  Clearly that designer wants to make brides cry.

@SapphireSun: That designer's sizing is crazy! I don't even want to think about the fit of their size 2s. Wow. That definitely doesn't make the standard up a size or two from your normal size system seem as bad now.

    I usually wear a 0 or 2, my dress is a 4 and I could've easily gotten away with a 6....it's pretty tight!

I was an 18 at the time of purchase, so I ordered my normal size, luckily went down to a solid 16 by the time the dress came in and fit PERFECT, now down to a street size 14, I have a feeling the fit will be perfect! And thank God for that corset back! Will give me a little nervous-Day-of room! hehe

I ordered my dress in the sample size 10, but I usually wear a street size 4-6 in dresses. However, that's not accounting for tendency to buy dresses that allow plently of room for my, ahem, "ample" backside...I'm a street size 10 in any dresses that are form-fitting below the waist.

@Gina-Marie: Sounds like we're about the same size! My dress size was between a 2 and a 4 because my bust is smaller, so my bridal consultant recommended I get the larger size. My dress hasn't come in yet, so I'm nervous about the fit and hope it doesn't have to be altered too much.

I'm a size 2 up top, a size 8 down below, and I am 5'10" without shoes. I was recommended to order an 8, which I did. I think it has more to do about where the dress hugs and what your measurements in those areas are. I think for my dress it should be okay, but I hate HATE that there is so much extra bust room. The only way that it's been suggested to me to fix it with alterations is to add cups or use chicken cutlets. Gross.

It's kind of hard to compare between designers and brands, though. My Jim Hjelm size 10 won't close by a few inches, but the Enzoani and Allure 10s were perfect, probably wouldn't need any alterations. But I'm an 8 at David's.

Then, on the clothing side, it depends on the brand. I'm a small or extra-small at Old Navy (! which is why I don't shop there any more), but a 6 at Express.

So... yeah, it really depends on a lot!

It definitely depends on the designer. I am a street size 6, and in most bridal designers I was a 10. My dress is a Pronovias and has Spanish sizes which apparently run even larger, so I think they are ordering a me Spanish size 12! It's crazy the difference, I am 4-6 sizes bigger in bridal than street size!

I'm normally a size 2 in jeans and XS in tops. Anywhere from 0-2 in dress size. I just purhcased my wedding dress and ordered a size 4... hope it fits! I keep having nightmares that it's going to be too small!

I am a street size 12 on the bottom and 16 on the top. In order to accomodated my bust, they had to order me an 18w and then take in the waist.

I think the wedding dress size is the 'true' size.  Clothing sizes have shrunk over the years so a size 4 a decade ago is the new 0 and clothing stores have now had to introduce 00 and XXS.  I wish womens clothing would just use actual measurements like mens!

I'm a 16-18 in real life, and my gown is a VERY snug 16. (I'm trying to lose about 5kg before the wedding so it fits better.)

I voted plus one but I am pretty sure it depends on the style/design of the gown.

It definitely depends on the designer.  DB is great for a little self-esteem boost - I went down a size there which I've heard is pretty common.  If not down a size, at least same as street size.   Most higher end designers design their dresses to European sizes, which are much smaller than American sizes.  The European 10 is an American size 6, although I've found that the European 10s are actually now getting closer to an American size 4 as it seems as though every store is determined to keep making their sizes bigger so people don't feel bad about their size.

Bottom line - try on a variety of sizes and don't be put off by the number on the tag, absolutely no one but you and whoever you tell is going to know what size the dress is.  Buy what fits you well regardless of whether it's +8 to your street size or -4 to your normal!  :-)

I wear a size 4-6 in dresses (like Maggy London dresses, casual type) but I usually wear size 6-8 in pants/jeans and Medium shirts...

But when I bought my Sottero and Midgley gown they said a 12 would fit best. I kind of wish I got a 10...but I think that would make me too nervous. At first I didn't fit into the 12, then I started working out and dieting and the 12 is too big... :-/

My dress was the same size as my pantsize but 1 size bigger than my normal dress size. My dress had a corset back though and I think someone a size smaller or bigger than me could have worn it too.

I'm a street size 2-4 on bottom 0 on top, and my dress size was either a 6 or 8 (I can't remember).  I measured a size 2-4 in bust and hips and between the size 6-8 for waist size.  I'm short waisted, so they had to accommodate for that.  It's frustrating, because my dress is ridiculously large except in that one area where my waist should be (but it's actually my hips).  I'm truly worried that the dress won't ever sit flat against my skin in the boob area even with multiple cups sewn in :(.

I think if mine had a corset, I could have went one size smaller and not had these issues though.

I am wearing an Alfred Angelo. My street size is a 4-6. They ordered a size 6 for me, but when I went in 6 weeks later to show my FMIL the dress they said a size 4 was almost too big in the waist. I have not dropped any more than 4-5 lbs. I am not sure how to explaint this.

I'm a street size 6, but I bought a "petite" (as in shorter in the shoulders and length since I am short) size 10. The same dress in a "regular" size at the same exact bust and waist measurements was a size 8.

@SapphireSun: Was that size 28 based on European sizing? Like how some jeans are? Just a thought...

I'm usually a street size 4 and I can't remember if my dress was ordered as a 6 or 8....it was the same size as the sample bc the sample fit perfectly. HOWEVER, I'm a bit nervous because that sample had clearly been tried on a few times and probably a bit stretched out?

I'll be that girl in June writing a post freaking out that her dress doesn't fit...I see it coming lol

My street size is a size 4 (sometimes a 2) and it was the same in the dresses I tried on at David's Bridal.  I kinda figured it would be that way, since the dress I was given is a size 8 and WAY too big on me.

though, admittedly, a few were too big in the bust and a little loose around the waist, and my MOH (who used to work at DB) said a 2 would fit better with a few of them.

I voted for "no difference", but it should be "no difference of smaller".

Mine is from David's and I ordered it in the same bottom size I normally wear, but in a W instead of just regular.  It will need to be taken in a little over 2 sizes on the top.

I think a lot of it depends on the cut of the dress.  If I had ordered a true empire, I could have ordered a size smaller than my street pant size (helloooo pear shape) but my dress is more fitted through the waist than that.
