littlelulu73:  I would clarify with your friend first that she actually wants the whole kit. Maybe she could only find a picture with everything else but the serving set in that picture is what she wants.

Well this is getting complicated.   I would go back and tell your friend that you thought you were offering to gift the cake knife and server and that is what you would like to gift.

I can see how your friend was confused.  I don’t understand exactly what wedding serving set means.  I think cake knife and server and toating flutes are logical things to associate with a wedding serving set.  In fairness, you offered before you saw what she registered for.

I think the best way to handle this is to go back and clarify your offer so that you’re comfortable and so that if your friend really wants the set she picked out someone else can have the opportunity to buy it for her.

littlelulu73:  I don’t think it’d be rude to not engrave it. Unless she has specifically mentioned the reason she wants it is for the engraving. I think she’d be able to take it to Things Remembered at get it engraved herself right? Then she could get exactly what she wants on it.

Maybe include a gift certificate that would partially cover the engraving cost if you want to?

Did she ask for the engraving? I would suggest communicating what you are and aren’t willing to do so that she isn’t surprised by whatever you do.

littlelulu73:  I had my daughter and SILs serving set (2-pc. only) engraved by the place I ordered it from. It was included in the price of the set. It was $63 including shipping and tax (and it was gold, too).  Unless you can get it from the manufacturer that way, having something engraved at a jewelry store IS expensive. (The bride can have it done herself, after the renewal).
