Wedding Hair and Makeup Questions

Oh I’m so glad you posted this! I’d love to hear your opinion as a professional in the biz:

I’m debating whether or not to do my own makeup for me wedding (i’m having my hair done by a salon). The reason I want to do my own makeup is becuase I’m really particular about how makeup is done and to me, it’s a crapshoot to find a MUA I really like… I could easily go through 3 or 4 trials before I find one I like, so it could get very pricey and I’m on a super budget. So to save money and to keep it simple, I was thinking of trying to do it myself! I don’t wear much makeup day to day, except I am pretty good at liquid eyeliner. Here’s what I would need to learn how to do:

-contouring (?)
-proper eyeshadow
-primer/evening out skin tone

I picked up some makeup books (good ones!) from the library the other day. Do you think it’s feasible for me to learn how to do this without too much difficulty? Keep in mind I don’t want a super “made up” look… I like looking more natural and using makeup as enhacement that’s not overly visible like a mask. I have decent skin, it just needs to be evened out. I was thinking that I could use the money I would have spent on a MUA instead on makeup at Sephora (foundation perhaps? Primer? Eyeshadow?).

Am I nuts to try to do this myself?? Any advice?

@SoontobeSelwood:  Thank you! That really helps!

If you have any recommendations for a good set (brand-wise), could you kindly please PM me? 🙂 Thanks so much! I was a little worried that I would have to sleep in rollers overnight; I tried that and it was uncomfortable.

@SoontobeSelwood:  How unusual/difficult is it to cover a somewhat large tattoo using airbrushing? Do you find that it’s a somewhat “rare” service offered?

@SoontobeSelwood:  Congratulations!!!

How long are hair trials/makeup trials usually?

I have always had fine hair… my mom could never get barrettes or clips to stay in for long. I am nervous about the hair accessory staying in where it should. There are so many options: barrettes, hair combs, hair clips, hair pins.

I would like to wear my hair in an updo. Which would work best for me? Or does it not matter?

@SoontobeSelwood:  Oh I NEED you :)))

I don’t have any clue what to do with my hair … I’m German, but my father is South African, so I have very curly hair and I have yet to find a hair dresser here that really knows how to style my hair. When I get it cut, I always take over after the last washing and style it myself.

The few shops here that are specialized on “afro hair” cannot cater to my needs either, as they’re used to really coarse hair and doing braids, weaves, relaxing, whatever. I don’t want any of this.

I don’t want to have to straighten (not even with blow dryer or iron) my hair to then get it curled. That just seems like a huge effort that I can see getting all frissz or worse in the humidity.

I usually put my hair in a bun, because that’s the easiest. My SO always comments on how he likes chignons when he sees brides like that, but I worry that it will look too much like my everyday look (even though my everyday bun is a far cry from a bridal chignon lol) and also that it won’t look as elegant with curly hair as when pulled back sleek.

I’m also afraif of wearing my hair open like on the pics because a) you never know how it’s going to turn out and also it doesn’t feel bridal enough for me.

Do you have any advice, inspiration, blogs… for me?
I’d appreciate it SO SO much!!! Many thanks in advance.

(Hair is longer than on the pics now – when wet and pulling it long, it goes to about lower end of rib cage.)

@SoontobeSelwood:  Ooo, thanks for offering!  Do you have brands/products you recommend for temporary hair extensions and false eyelashes?  Stupid me chopped my hair off one week before Mr. S proposed (oops) so I need some length in order to do the style I want (below).  Also, I’m DIY’ing my makeup – I did my own for my engagement photos for a trial so now I know where I need to darken/exaggerate for photos and lashes are one of those items.  I have naturally long lashes anyways, I just want them fuller.

@SoontobeSelwood:  Many thanks for your professional opinion on this. I’ve never had my hair straightened to then be curled. However, when having my hair straightened and it was a lot of humidity, my hair would get all frizzy and especially when sweating, it would curl again which would totally show if I had an updo of some kind. I would have thought that this would only get much worse if straightened and then curled, because I always hear from girls with straight hair that it can be difficult for the curls to stay all day, but at least they have a “sound” base whereas mine might already be screwed up with the straightening + humidity. Or do I worry too much?

I’ll definitely keep looking! Many thanks :))
