@woobie8709:  What woobie said.  Unless it’s a destination wedding or a large percentage of your guests will need to travel to come, then 8-10 weeks might be appropriate.

No sooner than three months, no later than 6 weeks.

@woobie8709:  you could probably send them 2-3 months out then, if not sending save the dates

Do save the dates a year out, especially handy for out of town guests. We are having a semi-destination wedding that requires a lot of notice for final numbers so we will be sending them about 3 months out but most weddings would be around 2 months.

@woobie8709:  Are you sending save the dates?  You should probably send save the dates whenever you’re ready.  Send the invites that contain info on lodging/transportation etc, 10-12 weeks so they can arrange airfare, hotel, etc.  The few out of town guests we have started inquiring on those things around that time.  If you’re using a wedding website you can list that info there as soon as it’s established as well, and refer the guest to the website on your save the dates.  Ten weeks should be good in that case.

@woobie8709:  Nope, although you might want to give people a heads up ahead of time.

@woobie8709:  IMO save the dates are only needed for destination weddings or weddings where a large number of guests will need air travel to attend.  You can do a very simple, affordable card that notes the date, city and web address.  Have all the details available on the website.  Or if you’d rather skip the STD’s, then just send the full invites out 10 weeks before the wedding.  I would take one of those two approaches, personally 🙂
