How much do wedding officiants usually cost? Can anyone refer a great officiant in the Orange County area? I wish I could just have a friend or family ordained, but couldn’t think of anyone we know that would be willing. =/ Please help! Thanks!

You might ask your friends or family, you might be surprised who would be honored to do it.

Our officiant is about $900. which is expensive for our area (Sonoma County, CA). However, he perfectly meets our needs. He’s extremely thorough and works closely with us throughout the planning, contacting our photographer, venue and musicians so everyone is on the same page for the ceremony. We liked that he isn’t just involved in the weeks before the wedding but even now in providing us with the attention the ceremony truly deserves. He meets with us a couple times throughout the engagement, getting to know us as people, not just clients. He works out details of vows, readings, making sure our ceremony is balanced as it will be an interfaith ceremony. As such, we lucked out in that our officiant has walked a similar spiritual path to both myself and my fiancé as individuals. Finally, in addition to being a well practiced minister, he has an extensive background as a family therapist and is sensitive to issues of blended families, which would be our case as my fiancé has two young boys and I’m about to be their stepmom. So, to us, it was a perfect match and we’re very pleased.
Now, I’m sure not everyone needs all these services I just mentioned. I noticed some other officiants in the area were much less, about $300-$500, and they offered reasonable services comparatively.
I hope this gives you a clearer idea of cost vs. service out there.

Our officiant is $150. I know I live in a different area, but I think you can find an affordable one in your area. I didn’t know who to go to either so I asked our venue coordinator for a referal and got a whole list of people to chose from. I liked that they had seen them officiant at wedding and new their styles so they could give me a good idea of how appropriate they would be or not. I asked from referals from a lot of my vendors for their reccomendations and I’ve had awesome results with it. Try that.

Our rabbi was free b/c we’re temple members. But they charge non members $400, so we gave that much as a donation.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I really had no idea how much they charge/ or how much donations should be. $900 seems like a lot to me, but that officiant seems to be going above and beyond what’s asked of him and that’s awesome! I’m hoping to find one that is <$300 we expect our ceremony to only be 20-30 minutes long.
