Okay, FI & I's wedding plans have changed approximately 562 times Smile which I'm sure others may be able to tell from some of my previous posts.  Here is our current idea that we're running with but it's a little unusual, so I wanted to get some hive feedback!

We're planning to get married next summer once we both finish school (he went back to finish his degree and it's the summer between me finishing grad courses and going on internship) and we're paying for the wedding ourselves.  We've decided to challenge ourselves to a $4000 wedding budget.

We still want to treat our guests to food and some alcohol and we've discovered a winery that rents out at a very reasonable price.  I then came up with this idea:

Winery + Gourmet Pizza + Catered Gelato = affordable, yummy, delicious and unique wedding!

We both LOVE pizza, especially thin-crust, Italian gourmet pizza with fabulous toppings (sun-dried tomatoes, prosciutto, feta cheese, etc.).

How does this idea sound to you ladies?  Is it wonderfully unique and fun, or would it been seen as cheap and tacky?

Mmm, I've always wanted to do that ever since I saw this wedding with gourmet pizza, but it didn't work out for us. I hope you get to do it!

We are having pizza as one option at our wedding along with pasta and salad. It is a surefire way for people to be full and not have leftovers!

I love the idea of personalizing your wedding to something you both love. That makes it even more of a special day. Who wouldn't love it?!

I'm sure my FI would love to come b/c he's obsessed with pizza!

I like it! Do it! We will probably do mexican food since we both like it, it can be affordable and we both know Spanish.

I think this is really cute (my FI would also love to come, he must eat pizza at least 3xa week), but I would strongly recommend having a cheeseless pizza for those who can't/won't eat cheese or are just trying to eat a more low-fat/low-cholesterol diet...

Go for it! Nearly everyone loves pizza, and prefers familiar foods to more fancy foods that are served just because it's a wedding. However, not everyone is a fan of "gourmet" toppings. More folks than not would rather have regular simple toppings such as pepperoni, Hawaiian, supreme, etc.

Also, about a year ago, there was a formal wedding featured on SMP that had pizza and said that all the guests enjoyed it.

Yay for pizza! I think gourmet pizza with cool toppings sounds delicious and awesome and you can't go wrong with gelato!

Like veganglam, I was going to just suggest that you have at least one type that's alternative. I know my daughter can't eat wheat or cheese, so whether or not she can eat the food is a big concern when we go to events. Same for the gelato -- you may want to make sure they have a dairy-free sorbet or something.

We're doing gourmet pizza (mobile oven), with salads on the side---so far only positive comments on it. We're just making sure some of the salad options work for people who don't do dairy or gluten stuff, but otherwise I really like the idea (which was FI's after we couldn't work it out for him to have a taco truck...)

MMM love pizza so that would sound like a perfect wedding to be a guest at in my opinion :) Some people are really picky eaters and so the typical wedding food might not please them but I'm sure that almost everyone would love to have pizza :) such a great idea!

I think it's a great, unique, fun idea! Who doesn't like pizza?!?!

I just read your post to my FI, and his response was as follows:

"That's freaking awesome. I would love to go to that wedding." So there you have it. A male opinion.

@ jduck84 and Ember78 - Thanks for showing me the SMP wedding! It looks amazing!

@ oakster - we're food twins! lol how did you find someone with a mobile oven? That makes this even better!

Thank you to everyone for all the advice and giving me the heads up :) I personally loved the idea, but wasn't sure how others would feel about it.  I'm even more excited now Smile

@qui40067, we're in the San Francisco Bay Area, where food carts are very "in," so we actually had four different vendors to choose from! (In the end, we didn't have an opportunity to try one of the four, and one wasn't licensed in our city, so we picked the one we liked best of the two remaining.) There is a company that makes mobile catering ovens that are getting pretty popular, though, so it's worth checking out whether there are any in major cities nearby---most of the vendors in our area were happy to travel up to three hours or so.

Pizza sounds great!  I would only caution you to find a pizza that isn't too greasy.  The last thing I want is to be eating heavy greasy food when I'm in a slim-fitting dress.

Just a suggestion for a cheeseless pizza.  Daiya brand "cheese" http://www.daiyafoods.com/ is the most recent addition to the cheese alternative market and it has really taken the world by storm.  It's awesome.  Soy free, gluten free, and of course, dairy free.  It has an awesome taste (I could just eat a bag of it plain, and FI, who eats cheese, loves it too) and manages to do what no other cheese alternative has done before, which is melt pretty much just like a 'regular' cheese.  And although it's not quite low fat, it's not nearly as high fat or heavy as regular dairy cheese.  Definitely worth looking into as it's so tasty and allergen-friendly if you decide you want to do something without cheese but not the typical tomato sauce and-crust route.  I know I would pretty much pee my pants with excitement if I saw a pie covered in Daiya at a wedding or other event.

    I think this sounds lovely.

Because pizza can be very flexible, I would recommend doing some informal surveying of your guests' dietary needs. Pizza can raise some issues (vegan, kosher, wheat allergies) that other meals may not, but it would be silly to offer alternatives for all of those issues if none of your guests need them.

Cute idea! and LOVE the gelato!

The lady who is playing during our ceremony actually had a "wedding pizza" for her wedding cake! It was a stack of pizza pies on those metal/wire pizza stands. Her and her husband were really into pizza and not so much cake.

LOVE the idea! I can think of few things more delicious than pizza and gelato! Our wedding is on a Friday night and since ALL of our guests are out-of-town we are making it a wedding weekend so on Saturday night we are going to do a pizza and gelato picnic! I think it's the perfect combo of relaxed, delicious and fun!!
