I went to the surgeon yesterday and was told I have… TMJ. He told me he usually sees TMJ in college kids during finals and in ladies planning weddings!!
Here’s the back story: My jaw has “clicked” for years when eating or chewing gum. Recently I have woken up in the mornings and had trouble opening my mouth. Eventually through the day it went away.
About 4 weeks ago I woke up and had the same trouble only this time it hasn’t opened! Somedays are worse than others. The other day I could barely fit a kernel of popcorn in my mouth! I have been worrying too much about the wedding and have noticed I clench my jaw while sleeping.
Dr’s orders: calm down, moist heat, soft foods, and 2400mg ibuprofen a day
Hopefully I can chill out or it will be a long 5 months!
Have any of you had crazy unexpected side effects from wedding planning?

Stress headaches and occasional nightime jaw grinding. Not to mention the uncontroable urge to kick my printer, or the need to obsessively look at wedding recaps. My mental health is finer, I’m certain… 😉

Try sleeping with a mouth guard to keep yourself from clenching at night. I was doing that for a little while, but luckily whatever was causing it went away, thankfully. Hopefully yours does too!

I got this too the my first wedding that I was planning, and I’ve not been able to chew gum ever since! *Knock on wood* this time around has been much less stressful and no signs of TMJ flare ups…FYI–I tried the night guard, and my TMJ was so bad that I actually grinded my teeth more with that in, than without–my teeth ended up cutting little holes in the guard…

Wow! That just adds to the stress! I self-diagnosed myself with mild TMJ. My jaw tries to lock on me, but I feel before and force it back open. Hopefully I won’t wake up and not be able to open it… if so, I’ll come to you for advice! Take a bubble bath girl 🙂

@kperry3: I second the bubble bath, and maybe a glass of wine!
I’ve had some insomnia. I’ve had to institute a “no wedding stuff for an hour before bed” rule (to go along with a similar rule about school work), otherwise I’ll lay in bed for hours thinking about wedding stuff.

Oh wow! I use to get that when I would get really angry…I didn’t understand it. That’s crazy what stress can do to your body.

Headaches and bad dreams (which cause me to lose sleep!!).
TMJ is the worst! I’m glad that you can do something to fix it!

Watch out with taking that much ibuprofen. That’s what they prescribed my ex-best friend for JRA and it shut her kidneys down.
