I would pick the date and venue asap.  But it depends on how far out your favorite venues are booking right now.  I got engaged in Feb and went through a lot of venues and date changes before I found a match.  I’m outside of the Seattle area.  Next you’ll know how to handle food, so book that.  And then photographer and DJ.  Those are the scheduling toughies.  Then you can relax a little.  They also cost a lot with probably a 50% deposit for each, due at booking.

My wedding is in September.  Should have mentioned how close it is.  I also almost missed the timing for getting the dress I picked out.  Had to buy it off the rack because it was too late to order.  Check with the bridal shops so you know when is a good time to still be able to order when you find THE ONE.

Just pick a date, venue, photographer, and guest list asap, then don’t worry about the rest until ~6 months before.

I say pick a tentative date, figure out a tentative guest list (# of people) then start looking at venues. Some venues won’t hold a lot of people. Once we started looking at venues (which can book 1-2 years before) we then realized we needed to change our date for the venue and cost (off season) that we really wanted. Keep an open mind but I would definitely start looking, especially if it’s a large wedding. Then start looking for main vendors (DJ, Photographer, Caterer, etc.) as they book up around the year mark.

I started planning 1 year in advance and I was glad I did, as I can budget it all out as we are paying for it all ourselves, they every paycheck I immediately send the payments to the vendors to get the balances down.

theknot.com has an awesome checklist to help you.

Like other said, get the big, stressful stuff out of the way, and then you’ll have some time to relax and enjoy yourselves. Good vendors book up well in andvace (at least in my area) so getting that out of the way would be really helpful

jbinlove:  I was only engaged for 8 months, worked full time, went to school full time, and planned our entire wedding. Yes, it can be stressful at times, but its not realy anything difficult. But creating a budget, then getting vendors confirmed will really allow you to decompress and think about the overall vision of your day. A year or more is plenty of time to get it all done without too much stress. Good luck! And congratulations!

We got engaged on Feb 18 of this year and are getting married Nov 15 of this year. By the end of Feb I had the church, reception venue, caterer, photographer, and decorator booked and my dress ordered.

jbinlove:  We’re not having a long engagement so I got a move on lol. I’ve planned events before so I didn’t stress out too much. Just tackle one thing at a time so you don’t get overwelmed.

My wedding is in December.

My biggies were venue, dress, photographer, caterer, and DJ. I’ve done all those things and feel like I can relax now some. Everything else is details.

I agree with what most have said so far! I got engaged 1 month ago, and so far we have the church and the hall booked.  Our date is September 19th, 2015.  One very popular hall was already booked for all the Saturdays in September and October of 2015, so depending on how popular your ideal vendors are, it may be important to look into their availability soon.

Right now I’m in contact with a couple photographers to get that taken care of.  Then catering and DJ will be next on our list.  Once we get those done I think we’ll have some time before the next big things need figured out!  I’m really excited for all of the planning, so maybe I’m doing some things earlier than necessary, but I think the things I’ve mentioned are the important ones that may get booked early.
