@lovelylight99:  You can check with @yellowshoe. I recall seeing a gorgeous wedding photo of her guests sending her off with sparklers.

We thought about doing the lanterns. But the weather can’t be over 5 mph wind, it’s good to be by water (lake or ocean) and there’s a good chance most ppl. don’t know how to properly light and send one off and they could start a fire. I have set off 2 in my life. One with FI as a practice b4 the wedding on our -1 year wedding anniversary which was romantic and perfect. But the other time was with my parents a few months before the wedding and I guess the wind was stronger than it felt in our backyard and the lantern barely cleared the tree line in our neighborhood then started going down and we lost sight of it and drove around the neighborhood for an hour in a panic and praying no one’s house or yard or tree would catch on fire. We never found the lantern but know it went down and not up. I told myself that was the LAST emotion I wanted to feel on my wedding night, total terror of possible arson. Just my experience though! They’re so tempting because the photos are so gorgeous. But spraklers are romantic and beautiful as well…and safer. πŸ™‚

The sky lanterns are gradually being made illegal in more and more places, like fireworks. So make sure you are allowed to use them, if you go that route.

You can now buy 100% environmentally friendly, completely biodegradable, no metal parts etc, sky lanterns… if I can convince FI then I will go this route, because I think sparklers can be a bit lame. Or you could have fireworks, maybe?

We did sparklers, and we got them from this site: http://www.sparklersrus.com/

Our wedding day was SO WINDY that the lanterns wouldn’t have worked for us at all. Even with the wind going about 20 mph, the sparklers all lit very easily and didn’t blow out.

The sky lanterns on pinterest look great but I’ve seen others that didn’t go off quite well.

I don’t think I’ve seen a bad sparkler send off.  They look so fun!

I just googled biodegradable lanterns… they still have a flame. While the lantern itself will not catch fire, if it falls into something or a gust of air bashes it back into the ground, it can still catch something else on fire.

I vote sparklers because they are safer. One you release a lantern you have no control over it. At least a sparkler is contained.

I vote sparklers! I went to a wedding where they did a sparkler send off, and it was really awesome! Plus I just love sparklers so it was right up my alley. :]

@lovelylight99:  not sure if ALL lanterns are environmentally friendly, but the ones I bought for ours were (I made sure of it)….but we didn’t get a chance to release them…

I vote sparklers and this is my reason (from an experienced lantern bride):

On our wedding night, the sendoff was going to be lanters. **FYI: The whole week before the wedding, it had been raining a TON, like monsoon style rain.**

My coordinator grabbed the lanterns and decided to do one as a trial lantern since it had also been quite breezy that day but the wind had died down later in the evening. She lit the lantern and released it….it was great and pretty UNTIL a rogue gust of wind caught the lantern and shoved the LIT lantern to a tree right over the wedding reception! :/ Thank goodness that the trees were soaked so it wasn’t going to catch on fire but my coordinator was seconds for calling the fire dept….

SO, choose sparklers unless you are at a beach. πŸ™‚
