My SO and I are practically engaged-just unofficially. Still waiting for him to get down on a knee and put that pretty ring on my finger.
Anyways, there is a venue that I like near our home town-but I know I’m not 100% happy with it. I’ve always wanted my wedding overlooking a lake, with a nicely wooded reception hall. Well, I found one. 2 hours from home. The good thing with this-is the location is actually where my family is from so I still have alot of family there. My only worry is people not coming from home. I personally wouldn’t have a problem traveling for a friends wedding-but I dont know if other people feel the same way. We would put on the “save the date” that the wedding is in this specific location so everyone would have time to prepare. Has anyone else done this? How did things go?

Katie918: I liked some venues that were further from where we lived but we opted against that when booking. What I would take into consideration if I were you is the guestlist. For us, we’re not planning on inviting kids but there will be a decent amount of old people. Because of that, they need to have the ability to leave earlier and get home within a reasonable time period. So, what I would do if I were you, is take a look at your guestlist and then decide.
If you have friends who have made that trek, they probably won’t be able to go home the same night so they would need to shell out for a hotel. If they don’t book a hotel, they’ll have to leave earlier and avoid alcohol which would impact the party vibe if that’s what you’re going for. So, if you do want to go that route, maybe see about finding some spare bedrooms with family members and helping link people up for accomodations? You can definitely put the details on the save the dates as well and spread the word via word of mouth.

I love a fun wedding weekend getaway and an excuse to travel/ stay in a hotel, but I have the disposable income for that sort of thing. For those who don’t, this will be an issue, so keep that in mind. On the flip side, I really LOVE the ability to run over to my venue for a meeting or if I were to forget something for the rehearsal/ day of. My venue comes with a coordinator so we’ve had in person meetings that were very easy for me to schedule in. I think there’s less pressure on you doing it locally because you know what’s around, you don’t have to pack up a car and hit the road hoping you got everything and no chance to go back, etc. My two cents!

I am on a similar boat. SO and I came to the conclusion that the people who truly love us the most, will come! I might cut your guestlist but you know you will have someone who truly loves you and wants to be there for you in this special day! Have no regrets…. do it! I am doing it. I am figuring it out but I am doing it too.
