definitely Mellwood, they were the only one I found in Louisville that didn't require a caterer. The only thing I didn't like about Mellwood though, is there are 3 rooms available for rent, so there are potentially 3 weddings going on at the same time!
If you or your fiance or anyone in your family work for the government or are army soldiers, you can rent Camp Carlson, which is a lodge that overlooks a lake. It's beautiful and very, very affordable. The only catch is the required military affiliation.
I'm getting married at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, KY. Which is nice because it's between Lou and Lex. They let you bring in your own caterer and bartenders. They also provide all the tables and chairs. So that will save you on some rental costs. Plus it is beautiful there!
I have attended a reception at Mellwood. I just wanted to advise you that it does not appear this facility is particularly well-kept. The roof was leaking (it had not recently rained) and there were buckets set up in the reception hall to collect the dripping water. Also, the space looks rather industrial. If you're looking for a modern/industrial feel, that's great. But otherwise, the low ceilings with exposed pipes/duct work are difficult to hide.
Mellwood is the only one I know of in Louisville when I was looking. There was a place in Fort Knox that was a beautiful log cabin. Inside it was just one big open space with a kitchen off to the side that you could use. It was extremely affordable but someone with a military ID had to reserve it. I think it was called Camp Carlson.
I know two parks that have indoor/outdoor spots that I'm pretty sure let you cater however you want. Farnsley-Mormen and Tom Sawyer. Both can be a bit of a drive but are gorgeous and not too pricey. Hope that helps! ~Melinda
Try a community center. The one at Tom Sawyer park is gorgeous. We are having our wedding at the community center in St. Matthews (Louisville). We are having an outdoor wedding and then the reception inside the hall. Very affordable and we are bringing in our own catering.
I looked at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort and Talon Winery in Lexington. Both are goregous, but Talon is $5000 just to rent the space and you have to clean the toilets when you're done. Between theis and the coordinator there being very rude and unresponsive( she didn't show for our meeting to see the place, but this was over a year ago) we didn't book it.
Buffalo Trace is gorgeous and very reasonable though!
We used the Old Medical School. Lovely room, great kitchen, reasonable price and you choose the caterer.
We were more than happy with our reception venue!
We are using Kaden Towers. They have an amazing circular room overlooking thier fountains. They allow you to bring in any vendors and are cheaper than mellwood.

I am getting married in May 2013, and looking to find a nice wedding/reception facility that does not make you use their catering. I can not afford $5000 worth of food for a reception! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Crystal
