I voted myrtle beach, because I think people will be understanding about getting married in the bride's hometown - afterall, that's what tradition says you're 'supposed' to do anyway.
Plus, I LOVE the idea of weekends away, and Myrtle Beach is a great place for that! 3 hours is a bit of a drive for one day, but not unreasonable, IMO. You could set up a carpool on your wedding website ;)
I would say get married where you want to get married and dont let the guests dictate that! If you find a place in Myrtle Beach you love then get married there and if you find a place in Columbia you love then do it there! Either place you do it people will have to travel and how does it make a difference if its 100 people traveling or 60 people? This is your and your FIs day so I would say do what you guys want for this part - because youll start to see very soon after that not everything else will be your choice 100%. THis you have control over!
Oh and I didnt vote because its up to you!
@daydreamwanderer : that is what I was thinking as far as making a weekend.
@clarebee: I need someone like you ALL THE TIME to put things into perspective and to help remind me that I cant please everyone and that I need to focus on what WE want versus what is best for the group. And I should have put a "None of the above!" hehe ;)
I voted for myrtle beach because I think that people will understand that it's in your hometown. Plus, it's fun to have the option for a weekend away (and I also don't think 3 hours is really that much to go for a wedding).
Everyone would like MB because it has attractions and is touristy and is local to some. 100 people would probably like Columbia but the other 60 would probably not, because it wouldn't be local and isn't as big of a tourist spot. Plus, its more of a tradition to get married in the bride's hometown! I think logically it makes more sense to do MB but I think you should make the decision based on what would make YOU most happy. Its you and FI's wedding after all.
Myrtle Beach would be great, but would it also be more expensive? It might be worth pricing out venues and catering in both locations to see. The fact that Myrtle Beach is a destination for a lot of people might push the prices up compared to Columbia. How much that matters depends on how tight the budget is, but it's worth thinking about.
I voted for Myrtle beach just because it's your home town. I'm also having my wedding in my home town. Besides my FI and his family moved away years ago. (even tho they still have a home in his hometown that they don't live in)
myrtle beach would be more fun, its your hometown, and in reality not that far from columbia - plus, who would want to have their wedding in gamecock territory ;)

Hello hive.
I am torn between having my wedding in Myrtle Beach/Conway, SC (where I am from) and Columbia, SC (where my fiance is from.) Or there is always somewhere inbetween such as Florence, SC.
Fiance has MANY more people that are invited than I do (100 to my 60)
So the question is...should we have the wedding at a more fun place like Myrtle Beach even though more people live in Columbia? Or should we have the wedding in Columbia because more people live there?
So MB would be a more "destination wedding" where people could turn it into a weekend or Columbia where it will be more convienient for the larger group of invitees.
