On an unlimited budget, I’d skip the driving and take the short flight to New Orleans.

Eat really well, find a jazz band in a dive bar somewhere, maybe spend a little time at Harrah’s Casino, maybe a cocktail cruise on the Mississippi. New Orleans is the kind of town where you can show up without a plan. There are so many incredible restaurants, and great bars, it’s absolutely fun to just wander! Plus the weather in October is great— probably the best time of year to go.

Well with Chicago being a major hub for united and a minor hub for American, if you’ve got the budget to fly, you can get a nonstop pretty much everywhere. If you stick to an 800-mile range, that’s an easy 90 minutes in the air. Gives you a ton of options, so it’s just a matter of figuring out where to go. Boston or DC for culture, NYC for night life, Memphis or Nashville for music, the list goes on…

If you like casinos (or even if you don’t mind them LoL), the Blue Chip in Michigan City (about an hour away from Chicago, in Indiana) is pretty nice and has an attached hotel, and the Lighthouse Outlet Mall is right by there as well.  Or if you don’t mind going a little further, New Buffalo, Michigan is a nice little area as well, but I don’t know any resorts there.  It’s about 1.5 hours away from Chicago.  Hope you find something good!
