We haven't picked one yet, but here's a not so weird one that some people think is weird. We go to Disney World every year (LOVE it but wanna do something different for the honeymoon) and we always see honeymooners there! People think it's weird but it's totally NOT just for kids! Amazing resturants, great hotels, and tons of stuff to keep you busy! It's a great destination for couples that dread the idea of spending a week lying on a beach... I would totally recommend it to anyone!
It sounds like DC would be a similar fun trip! Tons of stuff to experience together! Also, probably lots of great resturants and hotels. If it's what would make you and your FI so so so excited, I say do it! When you're there together, you won't care if you walk past a school bus full of 8th graders because you'll be doing something FUN and NEW with your new hubby!
I say do it also! We went to Ireland because we'd already been to Hawaii, Jamaica and the Mediterranean. Some people didn't understand why we choose to go to a cool rainy place in the summer, but it was so romantic for us.
BF wants to go on a Disney cruise. I will just pick the destination. He will like the boat part. I will like the exploring other countries part.
I'm not big for beaches. Sand in places you don't want it and salt water. Blech. I want to go see ancient ruins and eat cultural food or cultural dancing. (OK, boyfriend. Let's hurry up this proposing/wedding planning. I want to go to (insert random island!))
We went to a private island. It may not seem "weird" but a lot of people would have lost their minds. It's very low stimulus. No dinner show, no bar, no night club. Just us, a few staff, and the island dog. It was perfect for us, but we had a lot of fun listing off our more high-stimulus friends who would have gone absolutely batty with so much time on their hands and nothing to do, LOL!
Go for it! My husband and I just got back from New York City for our honeymoon, and it was amazing! We stayed in a four-star hotel, ate amazing food, saw shows, went sight-seeing, and I got to get dolled up and look cute everyday versus running around with frizzy hair and flip-flops.
We have already been to Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica and the Red Sea Coast in Egypt together. While we love taking beachy vacations, we wanted to go somewhere sophisticated for our honeymoon. NYC was perfect for us :) DC will be the same. It's a great, fun city. You'll love it!
If I did destination wedding I totally would do Stockholm, Sweden. If you did it during the summer you'd have so much light, and it's simply goregous no matter where you are!
I agree with October2010Bride, DC is a blast and you will have a great time. You can hit all the 'tour spots' but also find the quiet/romantic places to visit as well. A perfect mix of options that can suit whatever mood you're in that day.
The boyfriend does not like plane travel. He is too tall for the seats. So that limits us. I would hate for him to be uncomfortable on a flight to Europe or Hawaii.
@In the media: A lot of airlines offer extra legroom seats for an added fee. We flew JetBlue to Orlando and back and it was awesome! DH is 6'-1" so flying can be uncomfortable for him, but the "even more legroom" seats were perfect, most of them are the emergency exit rows. He was a happy camper, he even took a picture of how big the seats were! I'd gladly pay the extra $25 for the upgrade again :)
I guess the moral is, if I think it sounds like fun, I should just do it and not worry about the class-trip-ness of it.
I also do enjoy the aspect of getting to dress cute all the time, as opposed to beachwear.

I love beaches/tropical destinations, which seem to be the honeymoon of choice. However, I feel like FI and I would have more fun somewhere where we could sightsee, eat a ton of food- basically run around a city. Neither of us has been to Washington, DC, and I feel like we'd have a ton of fun there, and neither of us has been. However- I also feel like it's a bit more "8th grade class trip" than "honeymoon." So I'm a little conflicted on the idea.
Did anyone else pick a weird honeymoon destination?
