I never answer the door if I am not expecting anyone.  I don't even take the time to go to the peephole and see.  My husband just got irritated with me because I told him that someone knocked on the door when he was out but I don't know who it was because I didn't answer.  Maybe I have some sort of anxiety disorder, but I am always on the lookout for rapists and killers.

Am I a total weirdo?  What do you guys do?

I'm the same way!! My FI would kill me if I answered the door and he wasn't home.  I do check to make sure they really leave though, I have heard of people ringing to make sure you aren't home, then breaking in!

I answered other. Sometimes I do (after looking through the peephole), but, honestly, i feel awkward even answering for UPS. If its important, they can call or leave a note lol. I also don't answer unknown phone numbers.

@les105:  Oh same here.  Leave a message, stranger!  I am pretty antisocial in general, though.  Maybe that has something to do with it.

I chose other because I'll answer the door if I'm dressed, but I'll hide if I'm still in my PJ's.

Lol, I will at least look. That way if they look like someone out of Criminal Minds, I can run to the bedroom, lock myself in, call 911, and wait to die.

@peasantsong:  otherwise I'll be waiting for them to break in or try to come in a window or something! At least if I look, I can be 'oh, landlord lady, cool beans.'

Most of the time though, it's neighbor kids trying to sell me popcorn.

*but they could always be a trap!*

@peasantsong:  DH does not want me answering the door when he is not home. We have a gated building so people have to be buzzed in to come into the buillding anyway. So, if someone knocks on the door it is usually our landlord and he always calls first. no one ever comes over unannounced.

If someone knocks and I am not expecting someone and I am home alone I do not answer. I might check the peephole but usually not.

@bestbuddies:  WTF?  I am going to show my husband this and say, "SEE! Other husbands don't like their wives answering the door for strangers!"  He said, "No one's going to hurt you!" And I said, "Won't you be sorry if they do!"  All mostly joking, mind you.

I just had this conversation at lunch with a coworker! She was telling me about one rainy night a random guy walked up to her house and asked her to use her phone. The reason this convo got brought up is because someone from her hometown let a teenager in for a "glass of water" and he ended up raping her and holding her hostage!!

On that note, nope.. don't answer the door unless it's someone I know! If DH is home I may answer, but even then it's usually someone soliciting something we don't want anyway. Although I do hate the feeling of having to "hide" in my own house until they go away! God forbid they hear me roaming around and know I'm just ignoring them!!

I'm weird. Like sometimes my heart skips a beat when someone knocks on the door and I'm not expecting anyone. It usually ends up being a maintenance guy dropping something off or something since I live in an apartment. But lots of old friends and family members don't know where I moved (and that's completely on purpose) so I always have a mini freakout when someone knocks because I think it'll be one of them and they "found me." Haha. But yeah, I won't answer if I'm home alone and I don't know them.

@peasantsong:  I always say no cause I'm cheap and don't need the temptation of more bad food, but I still feel my ticket to hell being upgraded to first class.

I did try to make up for it by having a shit-ton of Halloween candy read to go, and then I got FOUR kids. We STILL have some left.

That just happened to me 1 hr. ago!  It was my best friend and her son.  Often times it is a neighbor or a kid/teen trying to sell something, raise money, etc.  Sometimes it is someone passing out political literature.  I would never ignore a knock.  Once an elderly neighbor knocked because her son was having a stroke.  She needed our help!

ETA:  I admit ignoring the knocks on Halloween when I've already run out of candy and have already turned the porch light out.  It does tick me off when my light is off late on Halloween evening and they knock anyway.

I only open the door if I recognize the person. The worst was one time this cable guy knocked and he needed to come in because there was a mix up with our cable and the cable below. Even though he was in uniform it really worried me because I wasn't expecting it and he could have been a serial killer ahhah

Haha! I just asked my FI about this and he said "I don't want you opening the door for anyone if I'm not here...I don't care if it's my dad, you keep that door shut!" Haha. He's a goose.

    I picked other.

I live in a not great neighborhood. I just shout "who's there?" and if it makes sense I answer. Also if it doesn't I have a gun and live in Virginia, so if they break down the door, I can still shoot them in the knee and call 911.

So far, we've had the police stop by 3 times in under a year to check on various reported crimes. I answer the door with the gun. All the police were really police (and understood).

Once it was my neighbor (I'm too short to see through the peep hole). He was warning me my car lights were still on. Good thing I answered! (no gun that time).

For delivery people-- if I see the truck, I answer it. If not... I get the gun and answer it.

    @LoveMySailor1018:  Ahhh holy crap! SCARY.

    @hisgoosiegirl:  lol!

I do, but only because we live in an apartment, and the only people who ever knock on our door are building maintenance people that we have some reason to expect. They have keys, so if we're not home (or are home but don't answer the door) they'll just come in anyway.

When we eventually buy a house, my answer will most likely change to "Yes, but only if I recognize the person."

No way!  I can't reach our peephole, so I wouldn't even be able to tell who it was.  We do live in a secure building, but still. I make FI answer if he's home.

I never do. I'm an only child with two working parents. When I got home from school I locked the doors and by no means answered them. I evenwent to extremes as hiding behind the couch when the doorbell rang. It definitely remains the same through adult life with maybe less hiding behind the couchWink

I've trained people I know to call first!

I only answer the door if my house is in order and I'm dressed. Otherwise, if they haven't called first then they can piss off! HA HA!

I always answer. I'm too short to see through the peephole, but luckily my dog barks pretty ferociously when someone knocks. Normally it's the postman or UPS or something like that.

Dh doesn't mind if I do not answer the door when he is not home. We live in an apartment and sometimes we have people knock, or the buzzer will go off downstairs and we will either both ignore it or listen in to see what's going on down there. One time I was home alone and the buzzer went off, i ignored it but then kept going off. It was someone we knew from 5 hours away but pretending to be a pizza guy so since I was home alone I didn't answer for about 5 minutes until they told me who they were, but I was a little freaked out anyway. Long story short, I sometimes will check out the situation, sometimes ignore it especially if DH isnt home.

Nope, if I'm upstairs I try to inconspicuously look out the window because I can't sneak downstairs and peek out...because we have this awkward-ass window in front of our stairs/front door! SO ANNOYING! If I'm downstairs, I peek, but generally unless you are family/friends who blatantly ignored our "CALL FIRST!" message you're gonna have to drop it off or leave.

I usually open the door, but I feel pretty safe where I live. I'm in a townhome/condo with lots of neighbors around on a busy street. If I scream loud, all my neighbors will hear me. I should probably be more careful though.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. If I look through the peep-hole and notice that it's a solicitor, I just try to be as quiet as possible, and back away. If it's a child (we live in a very family-oriented neighbourhood), however , I'll usually check to see what they want/need.. usually they're looking for recyclables, or $ for fundraising..

I never answer the door. The other night some solicitors knocked on my door TWICE...at NINE PM !!! I was home alone. I was totally freaked out. I looked through the peep hole and it was two men. WTF?!?! Freaked me out.

I almost never answer the door. If my SO is home, he will get the door, but never me. I am SO damn paranoid about rapists and killers and thieves lol. Que the typical horror movie or show...

    :knock knock:

    Who is it??

Maam this is Hank from the energy company I need to come check something.

    Oh okay, Hank.

    :unlocks door:

:gets hit over the head with a crow bar and raped:

^^^^^^^^^^^^ this is what will happen if i answer the door...promise you lol.

I always answer it...  but we don't have a peep hole and by the time I can go to the front door to see who it is they've already seen me.  But everytime I do answer the door it always seems to be uninvited or for our upstairs neighboor.

I never answer unless it's the UPS man, who we know, or someone I know who has rung our gate. With our gate, I feel like I should expect visitors, or else you can bug off! My dad came by once and couldn't believe he was out there knocking for 20 minutes because the gate was broken and I didn't ever bother to look though the peep hole!

But what if I look through the peephole and then they see that I'm home?? **hides**

I guess it depends on if I am properly dressed or not- I usually change into comfortable clothes or just wear a bra and shorts. We have a sliding glass door as a front door so I can't get a look unless I open the curtains which would be awkward. I also don't answer it when I'm just not in the mood for talking.

Haha, I almost always answer the door when someone knocks when SO isn't home. I usually am expecting someone though, like a repairman or a delivery. It all depends on my mood though, there have been times that I have just let people knock.  When SO IS home and there's a knock at the door, I usually DO make him answer it (rather, he volunteers to, and I let him)

I usually do answer the door. I order quite a bit of stuff online and DH's mom also randomly sends us things so we get a lot of deliveries. So, during business hours it is pretty much always a delivery person. Or somethings its our community maintenance guy stopping by to check something. I do look through the peephole first and if there isn't a uniform or someone I recognize I generally ignore it. I think I'm more trusting than most though. I let a kirby vacuum salesman guy in our house a few months ago and I couldn't get him to leave for almost 3 hrs. Which is why now I ignore sales people haha.

Ironically, my DH is the one who ignores the door. If he isn't expecting someone he just totally ignores it because he figures that whoever is coming to the door is probably trying to sell us something anyways. It annoys me though because sometimes packages need signed for!

I live in an apartment so I'll open up my main door and look down to the vestibule (I have a clear view). If I know them I'll buzz them in; if not I go back in my apartment. A lot of times people will ring all the buzzers hoping someone else will let them in if their party doesn't answer.
