My friend's son could shimmy himself across a bed at barely a week old. I was led to believe that they were incapacitated for the first few weeks, lol.
Not exactly about newborns per se, but I never knew that some babies never crawl. When my friend told me that her baby never crawled and eventually just went straight to walking I was completely surprised.
@skibobrown: Haha I was one of those babies myself. I started walking at 9 months old and pretty much skipped crawling all together!
My daughter's arms would fly up like a Frankenstein/Zombie/Mummy type thing in her sleep. If you coughed, or she heard a noice, her arms would fly up straight out! So weird looking, but awfully cute.
I really don't like dealing with the umbilical stump coming off. I avoided changing diapers when ever they were getting loose. I don't know why, but those are gross to me:)
@KatyElle: That is the startle reflex. Here are some of the other ones that are kind of cool.

Babies are nature's greatest "fart joke." Not kidding. :D They make all sorts of funny "inappropriate" noises. And if you have very rich breastmilk, their diapers smell like buttered popcorn. x.X
@mrskesslertobe: Luckily I know what it's called now, I actually ran to the pediatrician thinking there was something horribly wrong ha! Gotta love being a new mom :0)
@KatyElle: Lol, when Addie startled like that we used to always say she was practicing for her future job as an orchestra maestro. :) It's very weird, at first, though!
I saw one of my "nephews" being born. 1. He FLEW out of there. 2. He was purple. Like this: http://www.ariostea-high-tech.com/images/materiali/8/VIOLET/VIOLET-01.jpg Slightly lighter, and dappled with veins. PURPLE!!! The conehead thing didn't freak me out, but the literal purpleness did.
@KatyElle: That is too funny. I would always check the reflexes just to see if they really worked:)
I didn't know babies could have projectile poop until the 2am diaper change that ended with me covered in poo. I was so shocked I literally froze, with his legs in the air and a wipe in my other hand.
I think I was most weirded out by the amount of poo that could come out of such a little person. Her poo is bigger than her tummy is. How does it fit in there?
Haha. Can't wait to read more responses.
How can they spit up ALL THAT and NOT be hungry afterwards?! I never knew they had the ability to imitate so young - at 2 days old the lactation consultant suggested I had her start imitating me sticking my tongue out (helps with the latch) and she was able to! I also didn't know that hiccups could mean they're cold.
I never knew that babies liked to sleep on there tummy with there butts in the air I was my girlfriends baby do this then mine started thank god I saw it first or I wouldn't know what to think ahaha
I breast fed my son and his poop diapers smelled like buttermilk biscuits lol
Before DS was born I had no idea that boys came out "ready to go"... The first diaper change finding a "baby boner" kinda freaked me out!
"I was like OMGah! I didn't know they did that!"
@amnystik: That made me laugh... my oldest son's father thought this was a sign that his son was blessed in the man department. He's an idiot, but it was a funny proud moment. I remember being worried that the diaper might hurt him and very gently draping the diaper over him.

As a spinoff from the "Weirdest thing that happened to you during pregnancy thread," what was the weirdest or most suprising thing you learned about newborns, after your baby was born?
For me, I had no idea babies are so noisy when they sleep! Addie used to make the cutest little sound when she was sleeping really heavily. Like a little sigh, "Hmmm, hmmmm, hmmm." :) And she went through this phase where she's sleep scream. I don't miss that one, lol.
